My oldest (disabled vet, sniper, 2 tours) hates being thanked. I tell him to just smile and say thanks. People are just trying to be nice.

I agree those in service of others should not (and for the most part don't) expect to be thanked, but I disagree on the volunteering portion of your argument. Just about anyone "in uniform" that puts themselves in harms way to protect and serve others volunteered to do it.

That will not, and should not, in any way reduce my gratitude for those doing so.

Personally I don't randomly think someone for their service. However, if they do something that specifically helps me, I think them for that, and their larger service to the community they serve. Heck, I even thanked the cop that gave me a speeding ticket 4 months ago, saying as he was leaving my car after giving me the ticket (which I deserved by the way) "Hey officer, thanks for helping keep our community safe." He nodded and kept going.

You missed the operative word of "expect". You don't do it to be thanked. You do it because you want to. Sure it's nice to be recognized for what you've done, but I've known some pretty shitty people who put the uniform on, and literally do it for the recognition. If that's your sole reason for serving, you should take a second look at your motives.

I love my country and I am thankful for anyone willing to stand up for it. I don't care if they volunteered, got drafted, did it for college tuition, a chance to travel the world, or just want blow stuff up. I am thankful for them holding the line and know it's the hardest way to earn those things even if the flag isn't the only reason they joined. Whenever I can, I say, "Thanks for serving" to anyone in the military regardless of veteran status or not. One time (now I already knew he was on my flight because the office told me but) I was collecting tickets (we don't have boarding passes but we have colored plastic business card sized tickets so people get on that right airplane to the right island and we don't have to ask everyone's name a second time). This wheelchair bound Vietnam vet didn't have a ticket because he had been moved to my flight since he was there early and I had an open seat. His wife or daughter or whoever was with him to help him board was trying to explain sounding almost nervous about it as if I was going to be clueless about the change. I just smiled, looked at the guys Vietnam Veteran hat and said loud enough for most of the people in the room to hear, "Sir, you served this country, you don't need a ticket on my flight." and walked out to begin flipping switches to have the airplane to ready to fire up the second my First Officer closed the door. He tipped his head down just slightly in a nod and his wife put her hands over her mouth for a second, then pulled them down over her heart and mouthed "Thank You" to me from a position he couldn't see her lips as I was walking by. I know some guys don't want to be thanked but they should be and for that I always make it my parting words so they don't have to respond unless they want to. Trust me these guys don't thanked enough to make up for what they went through, or the way some of them have been/are treated after coming back from something they risked life and limb to make sure we don't ever hopefully have to do.

No I agree, and said so in my first sentence that it shouldn't be expected.

That would be a cool project. I have some super caps that no one would miss if you decide to do it

Biggest one we ever had in my 55 years in the Bay area was the Loma Prieta quake in 1989. 6.9. I lost a picture frame, half a dozen bottles of homemade Kahlua and my gas meter split open.

Had a friend's girlfriend (never married) once say living together is just like being married. All us married folks had a big laugh.

Dam. My toothbrush is possesed. It keeps turning on by itself, like it is sending Morse code or something. I wonder if Costco has Sonicare. I wonder how mad my wife would be if I came home with a giant TV too.
