First of all I would to make it clear that I don't have a loud aftermarket exhaust on my BRZ! But I am puzzled as to why car makers are all over the crackle exhaust tune while governments are outlawing them. I know in Japan new cars have to have "quiet exhaust".
As for those who are being tortured by the fart can exhaust noise, I have a story to make you laugh. There is a Civic in my neighborhood with a really loud exhaust. The obnoxious driver likes to rev his engine at every stop sign. So one day I think one of the neighborhood kids (or adult) walking their dog must have picked up and put the dog poo in his exhaust. Man, the smell was so bad... the guy must have to wear a gas mask while driving. |

Imagine if car makers could charge the same amount for cars, without r&d costs to make them faster, or better - all they had to do was make it loud and people buy in droves?? If sound sells more than performance, we all end up losing. No doubt that a lot of people would buy a slow car that sounded "aggressive" before buying a fast but mature car

My old Triumph would pop off like gunfire when unspent fuel hit the header. That wasn't the result of a tune. That was a function of twin carbs, a very aggressive camshaft and timing advance.
We didn't build it to do that. We built it for performance, and the sound was a side effect. I usually just drove it easy in residential areas to keep the volume down. My exhaust was legal. I'm not sure how you outlaw pops that are a function of the engine in older carburetor hot rods with no computers. You'd basically just be outlawing hot rods altogether. |

A similar unintended consequence happened in Pennsylvania. Idiots were taking the doors off trucks that weren't designed to go doorless and driving around like that. Crap would blow out of their open door holes, they lost the use of their side view mirrors and there were questions about crash safety. So PA passed a law that outlawed removing the doors. The clear intent was to outlaw removing doors from vehicles that weren't designed for door removal, but the cops went nuts and started pulling over Wranglers for having their doors off. Wranglers are designed to have the doors removed. One guy posted that a cop staked out the exit of his neighborhood, pulled him over and gave him a ticket. When he turned around and went back home to reinstall the doors, waiting on his street for him was a second cop who pulled him over again in his own driveway to give him a second ticket. I never assume that cops will use common sense. Most probably do. But most rattlesnakes don't want to bite you, either. |

@Tcoat
I suspect the Jags have some amount of adjustment available to them and that video must be on a lower setting (or possibly just does it less with the engine cold?). They're definitely more obnoxious than that driving around Toronto. The other videos appear to be primarily anti-lag and 2 step; both of which have their roots in racing but now get abused by the hard-parking community. Anti lag started within rally (group B I believe) and does exactly what it says. They send unburnt fuel through the hot turbo, it explodes and keeps the turbo spooled up (also terrible for reliability; but these were full on race cars with major sponsorship budgets). 2 step is from drag racing starts and I'm less familiar with it. The cars have a 'second' lower rev limiter for launches and I'm not entirely certain if the 'pops and bangs' are from ignition cuts to maintain that RPM (no spark, unburnt fuel hits hot exhaust, pops and bangs) or if it is also spooling the turbo while you're not at peak RPM (anti-lag style) or if it's possibly both. Neither has any valid use on the street however. (I do not like the hard parking community) |
