Insurance Just Skyrocketed!!!

Eight days before my first scheduled insurance payment, I just received a call from my insurance broker saying my insurance payments would be jumping by 40% from the original quote. He said the quote he had originally gave me was based off the Scion FR-S, given that the BRZ was not yet in their system. They have now classified the BRZ and it sits 6 "brackets" above the FR-S. How in the hell is this possible!?!? I can understand a small jump when it comes to the Subaru but such a drastic jump for cars that are mechanically the same!?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! I can afford this jump in price but it starts to make owning the car not worth it financially. By the way I am an under 25 male although I am eligible for a 5 years acciident free reduction in the coming new year, still I don't for see that being too great a relief.

Change the Subaru badges for Scion badges and remove BRZ from the trunk. Then take photos and send them to your insurance company to see if they will drop the rate.

The only reason I can think of is rareness of the BRZ vs FR-S, but it sounds like your insurance company hates customers. Time to switch. My insurance for my FR-S is LESS than my WRX, and the same price if I had a BRZ as it should be.

The point is to show them how idiotic they are. There is no difference between the two cars but the badges.

I hope this is a isolated incident. My insurance company didnt do it off the type of car. They manually entered the stats into a calculator and got my quote. This however seems to be reverse of what i believed the trend would be. In everyones mind Was the scion would be higher based on the typical age range that drives those cars. My old TC insurance was higher then this car. I have aged quite a bit since then. Atleast on paper....

Optimum West is my insurance provider, but it sounds like I am going to have to go shopping this afternoon.

Wow, $158/month? I'd go sell my BRZ if I had to pay that much. My insurance bill before I got my BRZ was $150/month for five cars (4 with full coverage). The BRZ was only another $50 month additional for me.

This is Massachusetts....that is pretty freakin cheap actually. Sorry...I should have told everyone Massachusetts has the highest insurance rates in the USA. I know a few friends who pay more than me for crappier cars. WRX STI's in my area cost almost $250 to $300 a month to insure. I pay $158 a month AFTER a Homeowners Discount, a College Alumni discount and being over 25 years old. I do have two speeding tickets on my license though. Without the discounts I would have been paying about $225.

It actually gets worse when I reviewed what I received from Optimum West it was closer to a 60% increase over the Fr-S per month with the deposit they were asking for.

Luckily I went to a different insurance broker just now and priced out several options. All of the options had BRZ and FRS rated between 37-40 in both collision and comprehensive categories and none of the insurance providers ever differentiated between the 2 cars by more than one point.

Needless to say I am now buying out of my current policy and switching to pay what I had been quoted to pay in the first place based off the FR-S. It sucks but its serious savings compared to sticking with them.

your car company is judging the car on many other factors. some of them might be like.. a subaru is a more niche brand and they dont deal with them as much. Or maybe subaru parts are worth more so they get stolen more. shrug.

I envy you guys that don't live in NY. NY is a killer for insurance prices. I pay ~1100 every 6 months for my BRZ, and that's with Geico. Liberty Mutual wanted 6000 a year!

*goes and checks geico's site to make sure the premium didn't go up*

Thats insane. I'm in NY and Geico was more than Liberty Mutual for me.

Over 40, married, multicar policy, but with an 18 year old single male in the household.

For an Envoy and a Genesis Coupe, 2500 annually. Estimated 3500 per year with the BRZ added in.

I bet the rep mixed up. He meant to call FR-S owners to tell them about 40% bump.
