Honestly, that’s probably the only part Toyota is worried about. If the updated springs are failing, they’re in trouble.

If the techs are butchering the work, that’s on the dealer. Toyota wrote a several hundred page picture book on performing this repair. If the techs can’t read, there isn’t much Toyota can do.

They just want to check the springs and walk away. Now it’s between you and the dealership.

J02 Recall Registry

Hey guys, had the car in for the recall and had a CEL not more than 200miles after for camshaft positioning. Took it to dealer (ann arbor MI) and they said it was nothing they did. Bought new timing components (still on order) and tore the timing cover off in the car. Found sealant everywhere and the cam gear that was throwing the code (p0016) was set off one tooth on timing. I consider this a failure to complete the recall correctly. There was a lot of sealant in the pickup tube as well.

Vehicle Mileage: 157,250
Vehicle Make: Scion FR-S
Mileage After Recall Performed: <200
Symptom(s): CEL P0016/0011
Failure: No Failure
State: MI
Is Dealership Offering Repair: TBD

I hope you took lots of pictures. Or maybe even video where you pan from the VIN number and then over to the pickup so they can't claim you took photos of someone else's engine. I think for anyone looking to take this job in their own hands should get video of the whole process so they can't claim you opened the engine and threw shit in the pickup before taking a picture. I hope you got yours soon enough to avoid damage from starvation. They didn't set the chains right and packing in the pickup is all on them. They should be held responsible.

“Hey, you just had my camshafts out of my engine and now I have a check engine light for camshaft adjustment” didn’t work?

Drop the car off. Pick it up when it’s fixed. Raise hell in between.

Is Dealership Offering Repair: Unsure/waiting for reply from service rep

I went in for the recall Monday March 4th. The work was complete on the 11th along my with my clutch, flywheel, throughout bearing, and spark plugs. Just 30 min ago my car died on the side of the road after a lot of clunking. I haven't even used half a tank of gas. The car was serviced at Erin mills Toyota in Mississauga. It being towed there now, I've left a voicemail with the service rep. I was contacted by my service rep this morning, and was told they will try to get the car looked at today. So far the dealership has been very co-operative.

All this before leaving on vacation next Monday.

Update : Was contacted by the Toyota Service rep. They have told me the motor was looked at, taken apart and the sealant isn't an issue. I find that strange because they've only had my car for a day. Currently the dealership is waiting for a response from Toyota before proceeding, but I get this feeling like they are withholding information from me.

The dealership is aware of these engines failing due to this recall, and that I've had 0 engine issue over the last 162000 km until they worked on it.

Before getting the recall work done, I was assured that they do these once a week and haven't had any failures.

i advise you to go in there and look at it yourself and take pictures of how it was packed. Dealerships are sketchy as f*** from my experience.

Failure After J02 Recall

Vehicle Mileage: 85000 Kms
Vehicle Make: Scion Frs
Mileage After Recall Performed: Around 250 Kms
Symptom(s): Low performance, Knocking then engine died
Failure: #4 Cylinder Rod Bearing Spun
State: Ontario Canada
Is Dealership Offering Repair: No they said it has nothing to do with the recall work and were going to charge me 6000 for a used engine and labor, or they would give me 6000 for the car as is for a trade in.

I took my car in right around the middle of January to have the recall work done, 3 days later I finally got my car back and everything seemed to be alright with it. Right around two weeks later I was merging onto the highway and notice I don't seem to have much power then shortly after I start to hear a slight knocking noise from the engine. At this point I am almost home so I keep going but the Knocking gets worse eventually stalling my engine. I tried to start the car again but it would not turn over so I ended up getting it towed to Toyota where they spent two days tearing the engine apart. They told me I had a broken connecting rod bearing and that it would have nothing to do with the recall work they did because the work was done on the upper part of the engine not the bottom end. After calling Toyota Canada Headquarters and getting a response of well if the dealership said its not from the recall work then there is nothing we can do, I ended up taking the car and the engine as they left it, and have been waiting for nicer weather to start working on the car myself. At this point though I wont be touching it until we hear something from Toyota about this whole mess. In the mean time I have had to start financing another car to have transportation again. What a nightmare I miss my car!

If you have the engine in pieces, can you take some pics? Bearings/Pickup Tube, Front cover, etc

Someone may be able to pick up what happened for help with the claim.

The upper part of the engine work not causing botton end issues is obviouly a stupid excuse. I think they are trying to take advantage of you.
