Steamspeed Turbos
Good morning all,
I am working with a shop that insists on installing a steamspeed stx71 in my 2018 BRZ over the AVO kit I was researching. What are some of your thoughts? |

Welcome to the forum! Sorry, I don't have anything to add on the turbo kit.... Just wanted to say "HI", as there are not a lot of members from our area. (I am just down in Eugene) If you need... I can help choose size/offset for custom wheels/tires. I am always happy to talk about wheels/tires. Good Luck!

From a small amount of research it seems like the Steam Speed turbo kit is yet another Greddy knockoff turbo kit. I can't answer for the quality of the manifold/turbos they use, as SBD has been the leading Greddy clone for years, but I do know a local shop to me also swears by Steam Speed for their other Subaru applications.
My advice: Either email Steamspeed and ask about their hot parts and turbos, maybe find out who makes them or where they are produced or Consider other turbo kit options; I personally recommend Revworks, JDL, authentic Greddy, or HKS. RW and JDL both make their hot parts in house and use name brand quality turbos, while Greddy/HKS will provide you with that JDM-ness you may or may not be craving. Good luck

Another 'Hi' from a local...good to see another twin in the area.
If there's not much info on the Steamspeed, I agree with others that there are a lot of options out there. If you're crazy like me, you could take a trip down to NorCal and have Neal at The Racer's Line set you up with a good kit.

What is the reasoning they're giving? I'd be curious if they're trying to become an authorized installer for some purpose. Do some research, I think the AVO kit is amazing for the turbo placement (they've had some slight heat issues if I recall though). What brought you to choose AVO? There are a lot of choices on this platform, some unique, like Ptuning, WORKS, and the AVO kit. Others have the same front, high mounted turbo with little design changes (mostly intercooler routing, or horizontal positioning to change fitment from affecting the fan shroud, windshield washer fluid reservoir, etc).
Ask yourself this: Why do you want the AVO kit? You need to figure this out before moving forward |

You need to figure out what you are looking for. Just doing a quick search for quality of installation I see and issue with that company. They do not offer installation instructions for their kit. There exact words are
“Presently we do not have a SteamSpeed specific install guide, but following this Greddy install guide will get you most of the way there.” That does not give me a good feeling of product support. Looking at the turbo it does not appear to be water cooled. This will affect ease of daily driving, you will have to be more diligent on turbo cool down. That kit will be able to make more HP than the AVO kit. The AVO turbo is going to max out around 400 wheel on E85. This is with everything you can do. The AVO kit will probably give boost lower and smother. |

I read up on a thread here for a safe reliable way to boost. It will be my daily driver, not racer.
Their response was: "I made a few changes and added a couple things. We like to use local companies if possible. Steamspeed makes a nice turbo kit for these cars and it's substantially less expensive than the AVO kit. It also comes with a turbo blanket. The BOV does not recirc. We will need to get creative to figure that out. Perrin is another local company that makes a lot of great parts for your car. I quoted you the Perrin oil cooler but lowered the price to match the FBM. We're an EcuTek dealer so you won't need a cable unless it's something you'd like to have. I did not put a gauge pod in the estimate because we need to figure out a location first. You'll need larger port injectors to make the power this turbo kit will produce. I included a set of ID 1050X injectors. The best on the market. As well as a DW65c fuel pump. This will provide enough fuel to make over 500WHP on E85." |

Agreed.
The bill on this would be around $8,000. That's why I want to make sure it will be solid. |

At making that kind of power you will need a lot other supporting mods... If you are dropping that kind of coin go with a quality kit imo.
