My 6MT is fine real smooth. Only issue is shifting into 1st and from 1-2 when the car hasn't warmed up at all.

I would get the dealer to look at it considering we already have heard of a dealer not putting any tranny fluid in a car before selling it.

the dealer doesn't put the transmission fluid in the car, that happens at the factory.

There are several models of Toyota that do not have change intervals for the transmission fluid, including manual transmissions, and this also includes the TL70 in the FR-S. There is no scheduled maintenance for the M/T Gear oil, it is meant to be a "lifetime" fluid.

I still usually change mine every now and again, but I'm just saying.

^ This. When the transmission oil gets to temperature, the shifts are smooth as butter. Notice this is when gearing 1st 2nd and 3rd. That's because they use triple-cone syncros. The later gears use single cone. That's why 4, 5, 6 are pretty good even when cold.

Why did they do this? triple cone syncros are practically bulletproof, so the trade off is worth it.

I plan on doing a transmission fluid change at 1k and 5k.
Maybe another change at 20k ~ 50k.

I think mine is excessively notchy, even crunches somwtimes, when cold and I come from a car with triple cone synchros.

Manual transmissions with dipsticks is kinda rare, but my Saturn SC1 has one.

I'd go further than kinda rare, and say very rare.

Most do not have dipsticks.

I'm having them check it when I go for an oil change in a few days. I don't think it's empty though. Feels pretty good when warm

Every Subaru manual transmission I've owned before this one has had a dipstick.

Yeah, but Subaru is weird, haha, leftovers from their odd past.

Spare tire on top of the engine? E-brake cables running to the front wheels? Manual transmissions with dipsticks? Subaru.

It's the things people think are weird that us Subaru fans love so much. I knew a guy who bought an original Subaru 360. He hauled it home in the bed of a pickup.

According the the marsupials in the aussie section of the forum this car has a dipstick hidden down by the trans oil filler hole. They said it was on the mt but I'm not home to verify it.

As much as I want to be a die-hard lover of this car, I must admit that the gearbox has been bugging me quite a bit. The first time something stuck out at me was within the first 50 miles when the shifter failed to engage 1st gear. However, allowing the shifter to idle in neutral for a few seconds fixed the issue. This problem happened quiet often (at least once a day since then). Then around a week ago, I noticed an increase in roughness of my gearbox. I figured it might've been a symptom of the transmission fluid warming up to temp. The big issue began yesterday when my gearbox grinded every time I shifted into second or third. The problem has worsened exponentially today. Every single gear grinds 9 out of 10 entries. The gearbox produces a horrible sound and the whole car jerks every time it happens. Additionally, when the gearbox doesn't grind, it would instead produce an unusual effect that feels like the shifter is being sucked in by magnets as it approaches a gear. I'm pretty disappointed and worried about the car. Unfortunately, I'm out of town until next Monday, so no service until then. Anyone else notice a similar issue?
Gents,

Has there been any resolution to this problem? I feel like I have a 'slow motion' version of this problem. I have almost 10k miles on the car. I've insisted that the dealer change trans oil. They say the trans feels fine - and I feel like its taking a dump. All shifts feel bad. Lower gears are notchy / gritty / grindy.

Any link to a discussion with resolution appreciated.

Bryce.

One of us in the AZ chapter had this happen to him and the dealership ordered him a new tranny/clutch/and flywheel. Take to dealership And have a service tech manager look at it and take it out for a spin or two. Shouldn't be any problem getting it warrantied and changed out due to it grinding every shift. Ppl are having the 2nd gear synchro problem but I don't get what your getting
