Satire is different, because it is intended to be taken as such.

Trolling is often, in it's "best" form, intended to be taken seriously. At it's "worst" level of execution, it is a waste of data and keystrokes that is still offensive.

Often, too, people troll on topics that are actually serious problems.
When met with hostility or defensiveness, they just reply "snowflake" or "keyboard warrior" or some homosexual slur, ridiculing you for caring about anything at all.

They do not value their own time nor anyone else's.

That's certainly true to a point.

BUT... I have difficulty distinguishing satire and trolling. Even looking around online at some opinions, I'm not totally sold that there isn't a lot of overlap. It seems to depend on your side as to whether you see 'commentary' (satire) or 'mockery' (trolling).

In the post that proceeded the creation of this one, I would say it began as satire but then turned into trolling. That is where I think cleverness and intelligence comes into play. OP could have continued on his current path without insults and played off the divisiveness of people's opinions about the refresh. Whether OP can is another question.

Trolling - IMO = Trying to actively frustrate and annoy people, usually by disagreeing with generally agreed upon facts or ideas. (directly pertaining to the current thread or forum) Often, these "Trolls" do not make logical sense. Making arguing with them pointless.

Satire - IMO = Clever, well thought out counterpoints, mixed with a Pun, play on words, or comical story. This should be in the spirit of discussion and playfulness. And, when called upon to share something real, the Satirist, should share something that unifies or strengthens the topic. (after all, most of us are here for facts and fun)

That is my definition as well. It is a deliberate attempt to annoy. Somebody stating wrong facts that they truly believe is not trolling. Somebody making shit up just to piss people off is.

So for example:

Stephen Colbert is a satirist in the sense that his right-leaning conservative character chose relevant news topics each night, and offered commentary around video clips or written stories that covered factual or perceived events. Even though it is mockery, he's playing off of other people who are already behaving in a certain manner.

If he went on stage each night and made up stuff about conservatives, had fake character, and reacted to all of that, then it would be trolling?
