It's the BRZ version but I believe the scion version is the same.

So it is fairly clear then that it may not be required of the dealers to inspect the MTM Gear Oil; just leaks (Visual Inspection). Those dealers that go above and beyond to make their consumers special are the winners. Scion/Toyota and the Factory here is apparently an issue. I hope the best for the owner of that vehicle.

There were quite a few mistakes here. First the factory that built the transmission, then the Subie plant, and finally the dealer. Parts department told me the transmission is just shy of $6,300!

BTW, I would make them take that sticker off for sure.

no transmission fluid? all cars leave the factory with engine oil and the neccessary fluids for it to be driveable for shipping that's not part of the Pre-Delivery Inspect. the only fluids that's not filled to the brim is the washer fluid.

sounds fishy...

Kearny Mesa is by me. Something about 600 miles on the ODO and being "Bone Dry" is fishy....

There would be remnants of oil if it drove 600 miles. I had a shotty shop and warranty company change out my trans several times. On one occasion, they put the trans back in with no oil (it was used and had whatever oil was sitting in it that wasn't drained out; new trans still have oil on the internals when assembled). I made it all of 23 miles before it burned up and seized. This was 7 years ago and I still remember it. Pissed me off because I had to buy a New trans for my car since both the selling dealer and warranty went bankrupt.

I would say so. It this can be brought up to the top leve, the factory should have the record showing which technician was in charge of putting the oil in and there should be an inspection/quality control person who failed as well.

(Not-so-related: When my friend got the FRS, the radio was not in yet. I can see there was a stamp on a steel beam inside. The stamp showed a Japanese surname (some like 清水) and a date mark. I think that can be a QC mark)

It's clear that there is more going on than a simple "it didn't have oil", it clearly had some, maybe not enough. Maybe some leaked out, maybe there were other issues.

Whoever has the car now will check what is wrong and fix it, and if there is something fishy going on, I hope Toyota will check into it further, or that it has been reported to the correct people. (In Canada this would be done via an FPR, and probably followed up on by Toyota).

As for checking the fluid on the PDI sheet, I didn't just assume it wasn't on there, I looked up the PDI sheet and checked before posting.

Update: The new tranny came in and our techs installed it. I was able to grab a pic while they were finishing up. The tech was topping off the tranny with fluid to make sure there was enough in there so this wouldn't happen again.



I did talk to the tech a little and he said there was a little bit of oil in the old tranny but no where near the amount required. He said maybe around a quart of fluid if that. He also said that the transmission is very light for a transmission. He was surprised as to how little it weighed. There were no signs of the fluid leaking out. The undercarriage was very clean where if there was fluid in the transmission and a seal was bad, there would be oil all over the place under the vehicle or at least visible spots where it was leaking.

I think the owner should be able to pick his car up and enjoy it like he expected to the first time around.
