Can I ask where "money shift" originated? Has to be F&F.

Nope. Predates that by at least 20 years. We used the term back in the 70's.

I read this the same way op typed it.
And could only mentally picture a dollar bill with two identical engines on it. And sifting in the prone position. Mind fuck... success.

We referred to trying to shift from 4th to 5th but ending up in 3rd as a money shift because it cost you big bucks to rebuild. Some old gates made the move over to the next slot difficult. Some newer gates are designed to help the move.

aren't most engines now a days interference?? Off topic i know but is the way the gate is "set up" the reason why when i go from gears 2 to 3 and 4 to 5 it feels like I'm just going straight up and not over and up, yet when i down shift in the reverse order (5 to 4 or 3 to 2) i feel like i have to articulate the down and to the left motion? If that makes any sense

How did we drift from money shifts to money shots? LMAO
One of the links above said that the reason it's called a money shift is because when you do it, you will be spending lots of money to fix it. |

Kind of close to topic.
When the old sports cars only had 4 gears forward we were taught to shift 1-2 with your thumb pointed up and use the palm of your hand to move the shifter. 2-3 thumb down again use your palm. 3-4 to use thumb down. This always applied pressure toward the next gate. Down shifting, 4-3 down, 3-2 up, and hope you were not slow enough to have to use 1st as it had no syncros. Obviously with 6 speeds this is not as effective, old people have a hard time unlearning. An other thing that has changed is the thumb position on the wheel, with no power steering if you had your thumbs inside the wheel and hit something the wheel would spin hard and could break your thumbs. I still have one old historic racer and have to keep saying to myself think, think. |
