Weekend at Tahoe: winter tires?
Hi,
I was asking in the winter tires thread but there is no clear answer there... What do you people usually run? I got my BRZ in December and it came with summer tires. I guess that is ok for the Bay Area all year round, but what do you do when you drive to the mountains in winter? Do you have an extra set of winter tires? Are summer ones okay for the weekend from time to time? I have two weeks to make up my mind heh Thank you! |

Unless you go there often or drive around the snow a lot, I don't think its worth it to buy winter tires. I'd take the money your spend on wheels and tires and just use it to rent an AWD/4WD SUV for the time you go to the snow.
But to answer your question, my friends in the east coast are big fans of Continental Wintercontacts and Bridgestone Blizzaks |

You could put chains on the rears but I also think you would be better off renting an all-wheel-drive.

With the amount of snow we're getting, there'll probably be chain requirements when you go up since there's a couple more storms coming. You're going to want AWD.

Glad you went with Turo The problem with RWD is chains on the back only gives you grip at the powered wheels to move, not in the front where you steer. Lesson learned from experience |

My owners manual says not to use chains because there is not enough clearance. It says another type of device, such as spring chains MAY be used depending on tire size......
I wouldn't put any type of chain on it, too much risk of damage. |
