Paint Cracking?

Just noticed this on my rear bumper - brand new car too... Jeez. I'm going to take it to the dealer on Friday as I'm busy with school all day tomorrow.

Any opinions ppl? Theres no damage on the bumper so I can't imagine anyone hit the rear, seems like a paint defect to me?

Can you post a better pic instead of the thumbnails!?! Image upload doesn't seem to be Firefox friendly.

I saw the first pic in full res and I would definitely bring it back to the dealership.

Someone hit you, our you backed into something. Those are from the bumper cover flexing and causing the paint to crack.

That appears to be a lack of flex agent in the paint (post distortion). I'm thinking someone nudged you a bit to reveal it though...
Sorry dude.

Its possible there wasnt enough Maddog in the paint to give it flex, or it was old, but highly doubtful on a brand new car. Either way that had to be inflicted by something hitting it. Could have been a car, luggage, asshole walking by(worst case scenario) but theres definetely been contact. Worth a try talking to the dealer, but your insurance company will be your next call.

I see a ding in the rear tow hook cover. That's probably where the impact was.

Well thats a bit*h... Unfortunately I can't go to Insurance since I'm on facility...

Will the rest of my paint start cracking? Or can I drive the car as is?

Water will get under the paint which will cause it to start flaking off.

At least the rest of your car looks fresh I might have a mobile painter that can get this done for you though. I'll keep you updated.

The other suggestion I have involves you living with it. Get a clear bra applied on that trunk opening. Would prevent cracking in the future and 'hide' the damage little bit.

I don't know what you mean by "on facility" or how insurance claims differ in Canada but if someone does a hit and run in a parking lot and I have full coverage (which I'm assuming you do) my insurance company will take car of it minus deductible of course. You should look further into it.

If I file a claim my premiums will go up. I'm already paying almost 800 a month. I CANNOT afford anything higher.

He may not have been hit. I found almost identical cracks in front of my wing on top of my trunk the day I purchased my car when I got home. Shot my sales guy an email and got this "As you know, after polling Subaru customers, they decided to use recycled paint." They are going to fix it but it seems to be something every one should look out for.

Agreed. My son's 2002 Accord looks exactly like that where someone compressed the bumper in a parking lot by tapping him on the rear end.

Makes you long for the day of chrome bumpers that just bolted on....

I am skeptical of this.

Fixing this will cost less than your MONTHLY premium. Just take the cover off, take it to a body shop and have them repaint it. Or live with it and suck it up.

Still though... $800 a month? Stop driving and get rid of the car if your record is bad enough to have an insurance payment that high on a 'normal' car...

Correct. There is no "recylced paint". The plant in Indiana (a zero-landfill plant) captures overspray with water then filters the water to separate the chemicals and paint particles (no filters to replace). The gathered contaminates are taken to a company the separates them further and recycles what it can and disposes of the rest (catalytic-scrubbed incineration I believe).

No paint is reused.
