Yeah. This is kinda funny. I've replaced timing belts, water pumps, rebuilt manual transmissions and used to change my own oil. This changed in the late 90's. It really changed when I bought my brand new 2001 Chrysler 300m. I used to be intimate with the engine compartment of the cars I owned. With that car, the only time in 185,000 miles I popped the hood was the times I cleaned the K&N air filter.

And the same goes for my FRS, xB and iA. Well, I had to pop the hood on the xB to straighten out a few parts and stretch the fender after I hit that deer, but I haven't since then...

Wish I could say the same for my 2003 Silverado Z71. What a piece of trash.

How about you guys check your oil 5 minutes after shutdown when you know it'll be sitting overnight. Then, the next day, check it again when cold. That way you know how much difference it really makes.

Too sensible and would waste good quality clucking time.

Logic, science and experimentation have no place in this thread .......

Dang! Where'd you get that picture of my brother and me?

The oldest car I had was a 1954 Chevy station wagon. I once ran the tires so bald that one day I heard a pst, pst, pst, pst sound and pulled over. I'd worn through everything and it finally broke through in a spot. Adjusting the valves on it was kinda fun...

Oh, yes, running on retreaded bias ply tires, till the retread was worn off and they were down to ......why they were retreaded ..... made for "interesting" driving ....

Adjusting the valves (with the engine running) took 3 hands (or two quick ones), one to hold the feeler gauge, one to work the wrench and one to try to keep the screwdriver on the adjustor post .......

Did it. Long ago. More than once. Hence my previous post: it makes a difference. But not much.

I always figured you were supposed to check the oil hot because I thought engine oil would expand a lot and if you filled it and checked it cold there'd be too much oil once it got up to operating temp.

The reason I thought this is because peanut oil expands a ton when heated. But, I did some reading on the internet and apparently that's not the case with engine oil. very little expansion.
