Obesity? 20 years ago if you wanted a larger car...you BOUGHT a larger car. It's not like larger cars didn't exist 20 years ago. What the hell does that have to do with obesity?

20 years ago the Civic wasn't designed by Americans like the current one is now.

20 years ago the new Accord that was coming out started to have regional specific bodies, the North American market one being much larger than the RoW model.

Now car obesity in general due to safety then yes completely agree on this since the 90's lol!

I used to have a CRX with a B18 swapped in. LOVED that car! It was small and light! The seat was lower than in my FR-S.

Civics have lost all touch with their roots

Honda cars suck these days. (Except for the NSX maybe, haven't driven it - and prob never will)

I've heard nothing but great things about the new Civic. You can't really blame Honda for giving the average consumer what they want.

I think the Si could be a really good bang for your buck.

Not saying there weren't big cars in Japan. If you were a fat cat of cuz you bought a Toyota Clown.

I don't necessarily disagree that honda cars are not as interesting as they were but...

Why do people insist that civics were once a great car? I liked them back in the day too but they were boring commuter cars and they still are. Without the acura division we wouldn't have even had decent engines to swap in.

I'll give you the b16 engine from the si but really.. what else? Don't answer that because I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but my point still stands. The civic was only exciting then because we were younger and easier to impress.

Edit:More to say

Also I think many people haven't been behind the wheel of some of the newer civics, the r18 from the 8th gen civic blew my mind, I still don't understand how a small displacement motor like that could feel so quick yet be so slow. I drove a family members 16' coupe, not as impressive but the handling was better than any civic before it.

It blew my mind when I found out, but Honda put double wishbone suspension in their economy cars up to the mid/late nineties. Couple that with light weight and good steering and you have some of the best handling capability on the market to this day. Toss a reliable engine in it, make it cheap to own and operate and you've got a FWD Miata.

My dad had an '85 Civic he bought for $400 about a decade ago, definition of a shitbox. That thing weighed 700 lbs less than an 86. Yes new cars are better, but they can't cheat physics, it was absolutely more responsive and nimble than my 86.

There's a contingent of prepared 80's and 90's Honda's autocrossing that lay down times on par with fully prepped GT-R's and Porsche's, and they blow away the stock ones. Power is cheap, lightness and good suspension design is expensive.

Depends on what you mean by back in the day.

Back in the day for me were the late 80's and early 90's when Civics had 4 wheel double wishbone suspension and sat ridiculously low like a sports car. They handled well and felt connected out of the box for a cheap grocery getter.

Both excellent points. No bigger fan of Honda through the 90's than I, but it's still fresh enough in my mind and I remember how much effort it took to make those cars great from stock.

A 94 civic dx was no race car is my point, and in a way the new civic is a better realization of the economic grocery getter than the older civic was.

On a side note the more we talk about this the more I like your side of the discussion over mine
