JDM FRS engine
My friend as 2013 FRS and is looking for an engine. His engine blew last week at 124,000 miles. We can't seem to find a good engine anywhere. Salvage yards who have it are quoting $2300.
I found a good JDM FRS engine at http://www.bestjapaneseengines.com/e...cion/scion_frs for $2000. Do you think buying a JDM one would be better ? They say it is tested ! |

For $300 I wouldn't risk ECU incompatibility IMHO. Unless it's been proven to work ?

Well that page appears to be for a place in Houston, not Japan, so I'd imagine you could pick it up.
Also, that's not a JDM engine. It's an FR-S engine. There are no FR-S's in Japan, just 86s, so no such thing as a JDM FR-S engine. There are only minor differences between the 86 and FR-S engine, because of driver orientation. That engine is out of a U.S. based FR-S.

I dont think this is a Honda man where the JDM engines are better like the B18C5 or B16B type R's.
There's no JDM engines I'm pretty sure we all use the same engines all over the world at least for our cars. Just grab another FA20 engine and drop it in there. |

I just called these guys in Houston. They said it is FA20 engine from Japan. They said they list as FRS on their website so it is easy to find. I pretended I would buy it right now. He lowered the price to $1900. They said they also offer a fully rebuilt engine for $2800. I figured they have another website listing the same product http://www.usedjapanmotors.com/scionengines.aspx

"his engine blew"
Ah yes, that seems sufficiently descriptive to be talking about the price of new engines. Why not rebuild the existing engine? What is wrong with it? What happened when it "blew" ? It's the same goddamn engine. Whatever. save the direct injectors from his engine, the flow numbers have to match fort eh engine to run right. Everything else is compatible because it's the exact same god damn engine. I have asked this question in every thread I see of this nature, because there are many. Why is it ALWAYS somebody's friend? Why is it never the car's owner?? Also 124k miles? That's 100 miles plus per day every day of the year with no breaks since the day it rolled out of the dealer lot...?
