Using Factory USB port with Aftermarket HU
I came across this when I was searching about using the factory USB port with an aftermarket deck. I want to install either a Pioneer AppRadio 2, which I already bought and I have sitting in my dining room, or a AVIC-X940BT. I've been second guessing myself after buying the AppRadio 2 and I'm thinking about returning it and getting the 940BT. Actually, I'm pretty sure that's what I am going to do.
Anyway, here's the link to the write up to be able to use the factory USB port. It's done on a Tacoma, but the port looks like it is the same so it should work. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/aud...head-unit.html I just need to figure out how to use the factory mic with the Pioneer unit and I'm set. I would rather not have a second mic in the car if I don't have to. From my searching, this seems like it's going to be the hardest part. Ruskymx |

I used this guide. Everything works. Aux does not play video, only through usb. I used gorilla glue to glue the usb plug in place. Last edited by keithbribac; 06-13-2012 at 06:10 PM. Reason: Add more explanation |

You will need Metra 70-1761 wiring harness ($5.39 w free S&H), Metra 95-8202 mounting kit ($10.75 w/ free S&H), and Scosche LSAAB Antenna adapter ($9.55 w/ Free S&H).
I didn't buy the 940BT yet, but eBay and Amazon have it cheapest. If you have an Amazon Rewards credit card, I think you can get an additional 3% in points to use towards future purchases. If you open a new account, they'll give you $30 instant gift card. eBay will give you 2% back in eBay Bucks. Since I don't want another credit card, I'm probably going to buy it from eBay. I have $11+ in eBay Bucks now and this would give me another $12. I'll be able to buy something in July for about $23 off. If someone wants to buy from Amazon, I have a link on my blog (link in sig) Ruskymx |

sorry if this question is a little obvious, but I want to replace my stock unit with the X940BT as well. The parts you listed about, (wiring harness, mounting kit, LSAAB antenna adpater)
What exactly do i need them for? I was going to buy the unit soon, but it sounds like before i can install it, ill obviously need more than just the headunit itself. How simple is it to wire everytihng together? Any help is appreciative, thanks, just trying to learn more about this stuff

So is the installation of one of these units essentially, wire the wiring harness to the wires that the headunit comes with, then just plug that into the factory harness? install the unit itself and route the wires and such and done?

Yes, that's about it unless you want to use the factory USB port. Then you need to follow the steps in the link that I have in the first post.

I've been trying to do this, but it seems like it should be possible to use that 3rd radio harness to splice into/aftermarket connector to wire up the USB & AUX. It seems that that 3rd harness is a newer harness.
Also, somewhere I read about the microphone above the light being usable, but it's a 4 wire setup which is supposed to be for an amplified mic. Any resources on converting an amplifed mic setup to a non-amplified 2-wire mic? |

It seems like that 3rd harness would have the key to being able to wire up the built-in USB/AUX/Mic ports without taking apart the dash or replacing the ports. Anyone have any idea on what kind of adapter is needed for that 3rd harness?
The bestbuy audio guy taking a look at that third harness seemed to think it was a new harness type he had not seen before. |
