yeah I would put a repeater in the nearest outlet to the garage as possible, should extend your range by 40-50 feet.

+1 on the Engenius stuff. I bought an EN202? a few years ago from a local computer store. I set it up in my attic as an AP with the minimum power set (1km range, max 11km), and get wifi all over my 300+ft deep lot. It includes a Power over Ethernet (PoE) injector to send power to the AP over the Ethernet cable. That way the AP can be set up far away from sources of power with only your Cat5E cable running to the unit. It's a good setup.

Otherwise, if you have a spare router, you can usually set it up as repeater. Check online to see if it can be done, some don't include the firmware necessary. Other routers can be configured with DD-WRT if you are knowledgeable with installing custom firmware? Keep in mind that a wifi-to-wifi repeater are dramatically slower than the advertised speed because the antennas are doing double duty, and also trying to communicate with a router that may already be providing low signal strength.

Haha, good one.

I tried to use an extra router in bridge mode, but there isn't line of site and there are too many obstacles in the way. Maybe directional antennas would make it work, but I decided to go another route. My carrier offers a signal booster for a very reasonable small deposit, so I am going that route. I can tether other devices if necessary, but at least this gives me the internet and my calls/texts.
