I think that is relatively accurate rule of thumb although they look at more than CELs. The actual emissions numbers are looked at from the OBDII connector.

From the Georgia Emissions FAQ site:

All subject vehicles will receive a three-part inspection:
•An OBD test to check the vehicle’s emissions control performance history.
•A fuel cap inspection to check for adequate seal.
•A visual inspection of the catalytic converter to check for tampering or removal.

All 1995 and older model year vehicles will receive:
•A TSI test or an Accelerated Simulation Mode (ASM2) test – This dual-mode test includes a 25/25 test (25 percent load at 25 MPH) and a 50/15 test (50 percent load at 15 MPH).
•A fuel cap inspection to check for adequate seal.
•A visual inspection of the catalytic converter to check for tampering or removal.

An inspector can reject a vehicle for testing if it is considered unsafe to test. If the test has already begun when the safety problem is detected, the inspector may charge the full price of the test.

Thanks to you both! I recognize you from the forums, Dadhawk. Didn't realize you were in GA. I think my plan is to pick up the kit before heading down and waiting until after my first test to get it set up just to be safe, but it's good to know it won't be a problem going forward.

Good info! Though, I've never had them ever visually inspect anything.

Some of them do it so fast it's easy to miss. They just do it with a mirror. Some stations have it on the floor so they just have to look down to see it.

If you are moving to more rural area, there are counties which do not require emissions testing.

I'll be in the middle of Atlanta I suspect so that's a no go. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Looks like I need to join the group. I'm located in Cumming. Chances are, if you've had your car at Road Atlanta I've probably seen it as I'm a corner marshal there.

As long as all but one (maybe two) ready checks are complete, your gas cap seals, and the CEL works but isn't on, you'll pass. As mentioned earlier the cat check is purely visual.

To join, you need to be local or within the surrounding states. We check all profiles before acceptance. We do not allow or accept individuals with ruined/broken cars due to the safety concern that those cars pose. (No hashtag herrafrush, sorry stance guys). We do keep everything respectful, but we do not sugar coat what we say. If you are an individual that gets butthurt over absolute nonsense, you might want to keep moving. Just follow the link below.
Uh . . question
What if people's pofiles are set to private? How can you tell if a car is "ruined/broken" without popping the hood and throwing it up on a lift?
I hope these questions don't seem like nonsense, cause it seems like me and the majority of new people that are trying to join get denied, shrug it off, and just move on for the most part.

Send me $100 in cashiers check. I'll see what I can do.
