A little sideways fun at Extreme Autofest today...

Our FRS with AT-Paddle at Drift Venue of Extreme Autofest today, doing a bit of shakedown and setup tuning on Falken RT615K and RS*R Sports-i coil-overs.

So far, pure fun.

I did notice again, just as I had in Press Lead event a month ago, the steering rack needs a bit more counter steer angle than afforded by the OEM FRS steering knuckles, and a few other details I will disclose once I get my thoughts all in a cohesive way.

For now, just enjoy the antics... Happy Motoring!

Thanks for the vid! Can you provide some tire specs, looks and sounds like it needs over 100 more HP, haha.

hahah, less tires would be cheaper...

With the RT615K that's on there now, yes it will be lots more fun at 300hp, but put the stock Premacy on and it should be fun even at 200hp... LOL

Sure is! That's what I live for, and heck, the AT paddle FRS does not upset me one bit even in places like this.

(BTW: how the heck do you embed the video on a thread?)

Didn't get pics of you running because couldn't figure out how to get across the fence w/ my Media Pass until after you were done! Next time!

But I was VERY excited to see that you were drifting an AT... Mine will be here by the end of this coming week

Oh yeah, totally fun. What I noticed most is that the biggest lack in terms of FRS in this application is my impromptu attendance here without planning to be there, and all I had was the very sticky Falken RT615K on the car. It will surely be cheaper and less stressful to the car with milder tires like the stock OEM Premacy.

FRS can use a but more steer angle as in small venues and doing antics like this, the car seems to want to settle nicely at at drift angles 'just' before the stock maximum steer angle, and its easy to lose the back end on small surface changes while doing this. It's perfectly fine for most of the faster track duties when racing as drift angles are smaller and time difference is more critical...

But something I should look into modifying a bit later, and possibly needed even more on a 6MT car since clutch kicked drift inducing can unsettle a car a bit more violently (and with more excitement)

The 6AT's milder yaw-induced drifts are somewhat controllable as you can see here...

But you do see the car spin completely around on some turns...and that is where if I had slightly more counter-steer, I could have prevented that much yaw from taking the back end on me.

Once you hit lock is there not enough torque to control slip angle easily that way?

No its not that there isn't enough torque (though more would be certainly fun).

It is more that inherent balance of the chassis where it wants to settle the drift angle against the momentum initially created from yaw inducing, the car just wants to get a certain angle naturally, and that point is right before the steering angle locks to either side.

Therefore, any additional yaw momentum or sudden change in asphalt adhesion for more in front or less in the rear, simply pushes the car over this point of no recovery. So one must carefully reduce this yaw just before this happy medium, but that's a little difficult as less drift angle, the car wants to just return to line, and more creates condition where steering angle isn't enough. With practice this balance can be had, but it would be much easier if it had just a small bit more steering angle built in to catch a mistake easier.

All this is only really a issue in low speed large angle drifts though... Higher speeds where there is enough momentum that can be induced with much less initial action is easily tamed and much more gradual and fluid.

Wow! That's really close to where I live! I'll have to be more in tune with these events once I pick up my FR-S next week. It's an AT too, and this gives me a bit more hope that I won't regret not getting an MT. Cheers!

I wish I would've known this was going on at Edison Field! Totally looked like you had a smile on your face the entire time! I don't really know what goes into increasing the turning angle, but after seeing this video, I can definitely see where it is needed. I definitely want to be out there doing the same stuff you are doing! Thanks for the video, Moto!

As soon as my RS3's arrive the Premacys are in danger of dying a loud, screaming, spinning death in a huge cloud of smoke. That looks like far too much fun!

And to think....there are people who believe this car is so underpowered, that it can only drift in the rain and with OEM low grip tires ONLY!

1/10 in line, angle, style.

10/10 realising you don't have a clutch.

Pure fun in a Toyota.

Love it!!
