Check engine light code reader

I want to recommend a OBD2 code reader for you guys who are "new" to newer vehicles.

You don't have to go to the dealer to decipher a check engine light. It doesn't require battery, keep it in your glove box. You can quickly check if it is something like a gas cap loose or something else, if it is a gas cap, you can just fix the problem and clear it yourself. Even if it is under warranty, you can get the code first so you know what you might be looking at when you talk to your dealer.

Believe me, it saved time and $$ from going to a Lexus dealer.. and we know, Lexus dealers can be expensive.. toyota is not far behind

Price is good now! I bought mine for $30 a few months ago

Get a wireless or Bluetooth dongle and get a reader app for your smartphone. Torque for Androind is great.

Just note that the iPhone won't do bluetooth, so get a Wifi one for apple products. They cost a few bucks and work great. "Torque" can do realtime readings of any parameter and logging.

Bluetooth scanner: $14 on Ebay
Wifi scanner: $45 on Ebay

I've got that on order as well as an air vent clip to hold my phone. That + torque + pandora and bluetooth = awesome.

Not sure if its the older/newer one I have but I have used one with both my DroidX and my gTablet in my FR-S. Confirmed here and photos in my Owner's Journal here.

I've never used anything like this before but it sounds really cool/interesting to me. The link provided for the Blue tooth transmitter doesnt work for me.

Recommendations on the ODBII Reader and Blue Tooth transmitter so I can see everything on my phone? Android.

This This
is the one I use, purchased from Amazon. Not from this vendor, I just linked to the first one that came up, but they are the same just find the best price for you.

I use the Android App Torque. I've been using the free version, and that is what is shown in the pictures I linked to ^above^ but intend to upgrade to the paid version ($5) next time I go to use it.

Reading the ELM327 documentation that the one you are using (ELM327 Solidport or other variants) is based on version 1.3 of the protocol. The one shown in the other link claims to use the version 1.5 of the same chip set. The only difference is that the new one has a mini profile so it should be less sticking out from the OBDII port.

I use DashCommand, it's an app that runs on my iPod touch. It goes a bit beyond just a reader. It opens up any OBD monitorable factor and allows you to graph/gauge it. It is also great to have while auto crossing for the race track function.

Thanks, will compare it to the originally linked one. Now to find out if these devices also work on Motorcycles and I can hopefully get one that I can plug into my 2009 Kawasaki Vulcan as well.

Torque does that as well. Can't say it matches feature for feature, didn't do a comparison, but I use it to do an instrument panel when driving. There's a few examples in my Owner's Journal.

If you decide to buy this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-ELM327-...item27c5deeb21 then make sure you log in to eBay because you can get it as cheap as $10 with free shipping.
