What happened?
Same thing happened to me about two weeks ago. I'm positive that it never blinked before, but now it does. At first I thought it was a warning that the battery in the key fob was dying, but after I changed it with a new one,it still blinks.

What is this Key thing you speak of?
So MAYBE that sentence from the manual is n/a for my car?
Ahhh but OP has a FRS and that is who we were addressing. Your keyless also has an immobiliser but it just kicks in when you get too far from the car with the fob. Nice try though.

Page 78 of the BRZ Manual:

"The vehicle's keys have built-in transponder chips that prevent the engine from starting if the key has not been previously registered in the vehicle's on-board computer. Never leave the keys inside the vehicle when you leave the vehicle.
Vehicles without a keyless access with push button start system The indicator light flashes after the key has been removed from the engine switch to indicate that the system is operating. The indicator light stops flashing after the registered key has been inserted into the engine switch to indicate that the system has been canceled."

Well Third there are really only two possibilities here.

It was broke and fixed it's self
or
It did it all along and you just noticed.

If you are blinking at the same pace as that light see a doctor and stop driving.

Thanks!

I knew it wasn't just me. I've owned the car for over 2 years. It's VERY unlikely that the blinking light was there for that long without me noticing it.

I'm just trying to figure out what possible changes I might have done to the car in the past couple weeks, and I come up with nothing.

Also, I just read the manual, and can confirm that the blinking light is normal behavior, as has been said by other users already. But that normal behavior didn't happen in the first 2 years. Strange.

This is 10 seconds worth of work to open the manual and read.

Game, set, match.
Nothing to see here everybody move along.

Tcoat is right but for a BR-Z it's different as well as the 10 series and possibly the monogram and 1.0 RS which have an alarm that is not enabled from the factory which you enable or the dealer was supposed to enable. It's off so during delivery so the people transporting the cars don't have a cargo ship with cars from Japan with alarms going off mid journey. You can check if you have the alarm as thus:

Test your car's alarm:

1) Open a window.
2) Close the doors and trunk and lock the car normally.
3) Take the authorized key some distance away from the car so it is no longer sensed by the car.
4) Return to the car, reach through the window, unlock the door with the mechanical latch (the power door lock is inoperable), and open the door.
5) If the alarm is ON and armed, the alarm will go off.
6) Race over to wherever you parked the key fob, and turn the alarm OFF by pressing the UNLOCK button (I think).

also @Sportsguy83 originally posted how to activate it for the BR-Z and 10 series a couple years back

1) Get in the car

2) press the start/stop button two times, with makes the car to be in the start position (all your dash lights light up)

3) Lock the car with the physical button on the door

4) Press the unlock button on the door and open the door while still pressing the unlock door button.

5) Still pressing the unlock button, wait about 10 seconds, the car will beep once for activated and twice for deactivated and the information panel in the cluster will say either "AL on" or "AL off"

Recently, my neighbor stopped me and asked me to check on her car. She said there is a light flashing on the dash and she doesn't know what it is. I looked at it and it was the same light OP is talking about. So, I explained. Then she said she has owned this car for 5 years and today is the first time it did this...

Just to add a little bit to this thread:

1. I'm fairly certainly this same security indicator light has not been on for my car (coming up on the 3 year mark for me) [although I won't swear that it wasn't on early-on back in 2013 when I first got the car, but it has NOT been on for the last 2 years at least].

2. Anyway, I believe it came on for me today after picking up lunch with my son: when I returned to the car and pressed the key fob to unlock the doors, I noticed that it didn't make the unlock beeps, etc. like it usually does.

3. The security light does indeed go-out "as normal" when the key is in the ignition

My guess is that the key fob is running low on battery and needs replacing (I tried my other, backup key fob which has been in a drawer for the last 3 years and it didn't work at all, so I think both need new batteries) and possibly triggered the security system somehow? ().

Anyway, I do feel better in finding this thread and seeing everyone's helpful replies (), but I do wonder why the light has NOT been on (consistently) over the majority of the life of my car?

(edit: and yeah, it could be aliens :p)
