I think that people are just looking for opinions for fear of getting screwed by their insurer or the repair shop. I have personally seen several times where insurance missed a few key repairs that could have brought the claim higher and had the owner get a new car or other instances where the insurance wants to repair but after a bit of back and forth they agree to give a new vehicle (totaled). Just my 2 cents

But the derailing is fun, every time! And you're right, on many other forums no one bothers to respond and the thread dies miserably. Must mean we're a vital, energetic community. |

THIS^
I have been on forums that if you even remotely went off topic the post was deleted. Yes, the threads were very nice and orderly and it was extremely easy to read. All 4 of the people that stuck around there had great on topic conversations all the time. Right up to the point that the forum died and eventually disappeared from the net completely and I never even knew that could happen. As I have said many a time, if a topic is strong enough it will survive a derailment. If it can't it was probably doomed anyway. Just look through the tech threads that are usually hands off for derailment and see how many bad questions get 2 or 3 responses and then just die.
