These types of comparisons, in general, are not really of much use for determining the potential a car has for performance driving. They are subjective at best. The critical characteristics to consider are the ones that are inherent in the design of the car. In other words, the things that would be difficult to change while maintaining certain peramiters of budget, and compromises such as "streetability". Factors like weight, CG, drive system (front, rear, all wheel drive), power to weight ratio and balance are all major factors affecting track performance, and are not easiliy altered while keeping the car streetable. Tests that claim they are measuring the "grip" of one car to the next are silly when tire/wheel setup alone plays such a huge role. Even a few PSI difference, and/or tire temps for a given tire will have major impact on the handling and feel of a car. The point here is to focus on the major design elements of the platform, not on performance tests influenced by tire/wheel/suspension elements that will likely be changed by the serious driver. These fundamental elements are what draws me to the 86. I don't have my car yet, but I do already have wheels here and tires due in Monday. I have test driven the 86, and the OEM tires were good choices to cut cost and make mpg #s, not for performance driving. Not that you can't have some fun on track with the stock setup, but you will murder those tires in short order pushing them past their limits.

Pretty interesting video despite the blatant Toyota bias. The MX5 typically performed just as well. I was surprised to see all that body roll from it though. That made it look about as sporty as a professional bowler.

I love the 86 but this was a CRAP comparison video! Obviously biased so much towards the 86 that it smells bad.
Just to mention a couple of things: 1. They never mentioned what tires were on the cars. 2. GT86 with Primacy HP tires outcornering a boxter with performance tires? Will not happen. Something was messed up or staged. 3. In test "05 S-curve". There were no rules for the speed. Yet the other cars seemed to miss their ideal driving line. Would seem like the driver on purpose understeered, thus making the cars seem to handle worse and exit slower compared to the 86. (If the cars were driven properly all of them would be driving the correct line, but the slower cars would have done the S-curve slower. Without knowing what tires they were on, the test would be irrelevant anyway) 4.Test "07 Cornering under braking" have the same issues as test "05 S-curve" One thing got confirmed tough. Body roll seems to be great in the 86! ![]() ...but most people here already knew that.. |

That was also a NC1 MX5. I built an '06 MX5 track toy, and could not ditch that crap suspension fast enough. It was widely criticized for being way too high/soft. The NC2 suspensions were improved. The newest the MX5 in the vid could be is '08.
