HELP WANTED!

OK, let’s start some chatter….

Lead Drivers Needed. Any Volunteers Out There?
Please PM me if you want to be a lead car group driver…More details below.

As of right now…31 are going on this forum thread and FB shows 105 going!

From the combined experience of doing a lot of Twisted Sisters Runs; there is consensus that having smaller groups of cars on the ranch roads is safer, contributes to faster speeds to nail the twisties and increases the odds of avoiding slow-downs. With smaller groups, a lead driver can make the call to slow down or pull the group over safely off the road to create a gap when slow traffic is detected ahead. Or, a smaller group of cars might be able to safely pass slow traffic if there is an opportunity to do so.

Right now, we have 3 team leader drivers “signed-up” to lead groups of about 10-15 cars on the Twisted Sisters Run. If attendance is more than double from last year; to be on the safe side - we ought to have at least 5 more drivers volunteer to lead groups of cars out of Medina, TX on the morning of 8/8/15.

This is your invitation and opportunity to be a “leader of the pack”! Kinda like in a sled team where the “lead dog” bears responsibility to set the direction and regulate speed all the while being mindful of the musher in the back. And, “If you’re not the lead dog, the view never changes!” Read into that whatever you want…but, there are pros and cons to both leading and following. Both are fun! Personally, I prefer the lead as to avoid any further BRZ road rash damage.

Once the lead drivers are identified, we’ll list the driving style and sequence the tentative order of departures for the groups. There will be about a 6-10 minute gap between departures (about a 5-6-7 mile gap between groups would be ideal). The space between the groups is pretty much gonna be the time it takes to line up the cars and have the team leader do a short briefing and check out the group to make sure everyone is on the same page. We also watch to see what turns left on 337 and wait for a big open gap.

As far as I am concerned, if you have a pulse and an 86 to drive you are halfway there regarding qualifications. Here’s a list of things that might help you make a decision regarding qualifications:

1. You must know the route. (Everyone should know the route! We will post a roll chart soon.)

2. You should have done the Sisters at least once. (Experience helps.) More than once is a +1. If you have the cajones to lead a group as a first time newby…I salute you and welcome you to do so but we need to have some prior discussion. There will be a test!

3. Don’t drive faster than your skills allow or exceed the handling limitations of your vehicle. Yada, yada. You should feel safe, in control, comfortable, able to handle adrenalin rushes and still take in to account road conditions, traffic and any special needs of the members of your team. Safety is your #1 concern. Stay in your lane / don’t cross the line. Be alert and follow the posted Guidelines/Safety rules on the first page of this thread. Yeah. I know, broken record but, we repeat this because of its importance.

4. As a courtesy to those that need to decide whose group to cruise in, team leaders should briefly describe their driving style when they PM me. A brief description might be “fast”, “moderate”, “leisurely” or any combination or extreme thereof that you’d care to advertise when we list your name.

5. Prior to departure from Medina, TX, team leaders will have a brief meeting together. Early is better. “Special” T-shirts will be distributed for the lead drivers to wear. Please let me know your T-shirt size if you are going to become a designated group leader because there is a July 23 deadline for T-shirt orders.

6. Qualified lead car volunteers will be accepted first come / first served until the 5 slots are filled. After that, additional volunteers will be on a stand-by list in case there is a no show of a designated team leader. If you do not volunteer by July 23, there is no guarantee of receiving a T-shirt or a T-shirt in your size. So, better hurry and send me a PM!

Also, just a reminder to all….

Attending and driving in this event is entirely voluntary and by participating; everyone (each participant) agrees that organizers, lead drivers, group leaders, ft86club.com, sponsors, vendors, etc. bear no liability or responsibility for accident, injury, property damage, loss of life, arrest, conviction, terrorist attack, space alien invasion, asteroid impact or capture by elements of JADE HELM 15, etc., as it relates to planned activities. Hopefully, none of the above will apply. There is no liability waiver to sign because we are basically just a group of enthusiasts bonding together to have some fun in our 86s and share some good times together! Comprendes?

Somebody please alert the FB site and share this link that we need lead car drivers! The sound of crickets implies a serious lack of cajones in this group or there is a mass desire to drive in a long procession of cars that might not be cruising as fast as most would desire to go. Hey, if we end up with larger group sizes, we’ll just deal with it! Faster cars/drivers to the front and slower to the rear.

I’m gonna lead a group and I’d describe my style as moderate. I will be doing the twisties aggressively. In spots where we’ve seen radar, I will be doing pretty much the speed limit. On some straight-aways I won’t waste time but, I also don’t want to run up behind slower traffic when I know there are some twisties ahead. I might slow down a lot to keep that from happening especially if I see something up ahead. I might even slow down a bit in a spot or two just to enjoy the view if I want to … but, not if it is in a really fun spot to nail!

Please send me a PM if you definitely want to serve your fellow 86 owners to lead a group or want to discuss. Your questions are encouraged and welcomed!

John

Well i am dissapoint. Looking forward to see who the leaders are. TEWwild set a pretty high bar for fun last year. I encourage someone to fill those shoes but im not pressing for someone to go out of their comfort zone while leading. @Shneegle Weather should be SUPER nice so expect traffic. The earlier we leave the better.

This would be why we are aiming for an early first few groups. Not as big of a deal for the groups that are not going to push and want to enjoy their surroundings.
