You do realize that tax varies from state to state... right?

So if taxes were included in the pure price that means toyota would make less money off a car sold in California than a car sold in Wyoming. That wouldn't really make sense, would it?

If you buy out of state, you pay the local tax rate of the dealership... so Oregon is your only bet. 0%

Tax rate is based on where you live, not the dealership location (unless it's out of state).

I don't think it's as simple as that. I could be wrong, but I remember the taxes on certain things (such as vehicle purchases) being charged based on your information.

For example, when I bought my current car, the tax rate of that area (Orange County, CA) was 7.75%, but based on the address on my driver license at the time (which obviously matched the information on the application), I had a zip code (elsewhere in CA) that yielded a lower tax rate.

Also, there may be some complications when registering it too, but perhaps someone better versed in that aspect can chime in.

When my wife bought her MINI in PA, we paid zero sales tax in PA and 5% in WV. The taxes are based on where you register the vehicle.

When you insure it in your state you don't need to pay the Tax for the state you live in?

That's how it works in BC. If you buy out of province you need to pay HST when you insure it.

I was going to buy a new car in NY and they werent charging me tax since I live in VA. I would however be charged sales tax when I register the car in VA.

Hehe, I know. I just figured it would/should be the same in the States since it seems silly for it not to be.

My dealer has been absolutely great but if I could save myself 12% by buying my car down in Oregon I would have in a heartbeat.

Besides, the drive back would be much more fun than the drive there.

CA DMV will not let you register your NEW car bought out of state though.

Oh they will, but as stated earlier, you will pay the tax when you register the car. They will give you only a temp reg to get yourself home.

Emissions testing may be legit. In California, we have Smog Abatement ($20., excluded on Hybrids).

Doc Fees are at every dealer and there is a limit on how much can be charged.

Regional Adjustment may be if you're part of the Gulf State Toyota (GST) dealers. Not 100% sure, but I think Texas is under their distribution.
