You do have a valid point, this does need to be properly engineered. Keep in mind that is basically a Miata grafted under a Volvo and hence there is plenty of basic structure to work with. Also, its going to be a cruiser, not a slalom car, so we are not needing the stiffest structure on the planet. If it is as good as the Volvo was from the factory, I will be content.

Should be sound enough if it can take the V8.
Forgot how much I liked the body styling on those old Volvo wagons!!!! They were way bizarre back in the day.
That is gonna be sweet!

Targa top to at least keep some horizontal rigity, if it doesn't, it'll probably feel like a different car. If not targa, I'd probably go Miata, it looks really good for the new gen.

Two seats. Relatively good power to weight ratio with a max weight under 3000lb, and RWD are the bare essentials of being a sports-car.

You will notice that by this definition, the FRS is a sports Coupe and hence does not qualify as a "sports car" unless you are willing to admit that the rear seats are not really functional.
errrr, so do you think there are any new sports cars?

most of the <3000lb cars are fwd, porsches (mr/rr) and exotics (mr)

what fr cars are there <3000lbs? caterham? super 7's? s2000 but that's not new

edit: maybe miata? but the "good" power to weight ratio is kind of...

Obviously, they had been releasing limited versions, but that is not enough. They teased us the convertible 86. But got kicked in the butts by Subaru.

They really want to keep up the momentums, so they study it internally as where, how, to produce the 86 convertible without Subaru helps.

Therefore, I have you all an Ultimate question.

If Toyota was to sell more of the 86. Would you buy.

1/ More Powerful 86.
2/ Convertible.
More power.

Here is my definition of a Sportscar.

MUST FALL INTO AT LEAST TWO OF THE BELOW CATEGORIES.

- Two doors (Not including Vans or Trucks)
- No rear seats (Not including Vans or Trucks)
- High hp per litre ratio engine AND/OR Turbocharged
- RWD or AWD format
- Sold exclusively as a sports themed vehicle, not derived from a economy base model

So using the above guide the EVO is indeed a sports car as it meets the third and fourth requirements.

The RX8 is another sports car with 4 doors albeit suicide doors.

Don't agree at all. By this definition a SRT8 grand Cherokee would be a sportscar?

Agreed. That is way too broad. A Chrysler 200 AWD fits his definition by having the Pentastar and AWD. There aren't many AWD cars out there that I'd consider a sports car to be honest. Even most AWD 911s are edging more GT than sports cars IMO.

I'm hesitant to call the FR-S a sports car because the coupe shape clearly exists for practicality's sake. If the FR-S had a coupe profile more like an RX7, was a couple hundred pounds lighter (basically more focused), I'd be more inclined to call it an actual sports car. Sports coupe is an accurate definition for the BRZ/FR-S. Something like a Civic Si would be a sport compact (despite being a sporty coupe... haha).

Having just spent $1,600 to have the convertible top replaced on MomHawk's '05 Mustang, I have no desire to EVER buy a convertible again. Of course, her next car will be a convertible....

My preference would be:

Targa/Louvers > Targa > Louvers> More Power > Stretched More Back Legroom > any other modification > any other car > Convertible

Without getting into the unfordable or exotic, there are a fewexamples that are in production. Since you want "New" I will toss in a likely candidate from Alpha that marries a Miata to an Italian stylist. And for sure...Miata continuesto locate itself square in the middle of "Sports Car" definition, proving that the niche definition is right by succeeding for 25 years.

So basically miatas and Mr/rr cars? Don't think any other new fr cars other than ft86 comes in less than 3000 lbs.

I think the 3000lbs is arbitrary. A corvette, for example, is a bonafide sports car but it is just over 3000lbs.
