When it comes down to it both cars are very similar, but the FRS is more tossable on the track since its suspension is stiffer than the BRZ.
If your a beginner track driver, the BRZ is the ideal car to drive since it's is easier to control to its limit. Take note, this is for a stock FRS VS a stock BRZ. Modifying them is another story... |

if you've had track time with a car that wasn't yours it takes about 5-7 laps to get comfortable with the car. there are cars that may take less, i drove an elise at laguna seca and within the first lap i could tell what the car was capable of. as the laps progress beyond 7 laps on any car, you find yourself taking a little more speed going into corners because you know what the car can and can't do. this guy is a professional driver. i find it hard to believe he misjudged the braking point of a 200hp car.

It's been confirmed by this document that the FR-S also has this indicator. It's the third bullet-point under the Instrument Panel heading on the first page.

MX-5 and 86 are very close in price, so it makes sense to compare them. s2k is almost $10k more, a totally different league of price/performance.

Exactly. The drivers were having some fun, and the TV station wanted some "heightened reality", so they had the Toyota hang out the tail to play up the supposed handling differences between it and the BRZ. They arranged the cars so the BRZ and Toyota would pass the Miata.

you will probably see a track vid but not racing. we plan on renting Horse Thief Mile later this year and have our first 30 owners drive their cars so they can enjoy it in a track enviroment.

people stated who the driver of the BRZ was and rattled off his credentials. so he either slowed down for the GT to make it a closer race or was told that the BRZ could not win during the taping.

They are shifting at 99 Kilometers per hour in 2nd gear...that is 61.5 MPH.
14.3 1/4 mile in the 86? Damn! |

Good videos. Kind of nails down the FT vs MX-5 question.

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet . . . 86 in-car footage was a fair bit louder than the BRZ.
An actual difference, or just a product of individual camera/mic & their mounting? |

A better comparison would've been having all 3 drivers drive a few laps around the course in all 3 cars and compared times.
Maybe I'm a conspiracy theorist but something definitely seemed a bit off to me about the ease that the 86 passed the BRZ. It may very well be a little faster and handle a bit better, but I don't think the differences are that drastic as to what happened there without driver fault. |

Also - it is possible that KMS is right in terms of a bias in terms of which driver wins, as Keiichi Tsuchiya is highly-respected (so Naoki may not have wanted to pass him) and pretty much the face of Best Motoring (well, him and Kasumi Kondo). I notice in terms of the battles, Keiichi Tsuchiya wins a lot of them - either this is truly skill, or a mixture of skill, and of the other drivers perhaps letting off a little (but probably not much). Either way, a N/A 4-cyl in the under $30k price range that hits low 14s for the 1/4 looks pretty good in terms of straightline performance (IIRC, the previous Celica GT-S, also a lightweight high-revver managed low 15s and maybe high 14s with the higher fuel cutoff in earlier models) |

I find it interesting that the BRZ was quicker off the line in both videos. I wonder if that's driver skill/feel or if the suspension settings have something to do with that?
Could it be that the difference in spring rates that make the Toyota version more tail-happy give the Subaru the edge keeping traction on the launch? Interesting trade-off if this is true.. |
