It's neat to see people so intrigued in the design of our cars!

Me, I'm just gonna buy a little cricket sticker and embrace the noise that IMO is just apart of its current character.

Then you could send it to Toyota and ask how their Army of engineers can design this amazing car, but not get the squeak out of the fuel pump after a year. Especially since you were able to diagnose the problem in your room on your home computer. LOL

well thank you for the high thoughts. but I had a little more than was available to me in my room at home...I happen to have a full Machine shop and all required inspection equipment to make Aerospace parts for the last 6 decades. (no im not that old) but the shop and it's customers are.

Nice analysis in the OP, but the elephant in the room is why hasn't Toyota looked into root cause and come up with a remedy? Why is a forum member doing this work?

Because it isn't crucial to the reliability or operation of the vehicle, it will generate them at best minimal added profit for a significant cost.

GDI is noisy and the problem is not unique to Toyota, most manufacturers bury the units under sound deadening and pump manufacturers are still struggling to quiet the system down:

I'm sure the fuel pumps people keep having Subaru/Toyota replace will start adding up if they haven't already. That being said, this is some great info here. Thanks for bumping this!

Another example is current-gen V6 Camaros. For the 2012 model year, they added sound deadening and re-located the HPFP. They were getting complaints about the noise. Even with the changes, it's still very noticeable at idle when you're next to a wall (like a drive-thru, which is when I normally get mad at my FR-S for the noise).

Does anyone have any pictures of the pump itself out side of the car? Or, possibly, do you have details on the manufacture/part # of the pump(not the OEM Subaru part #).

My dad just happens to be in the fuel injection world. He has been rebuilding injection pumps(common rail, high pressure, ect) on diesels since before I was born. We were thinking if we had details on the pump we may be able to pull up something thru the manufacture as far as parts breakdowns, diagrams, ect.

He thinks this is a very odd sound, granted everything is different, he has not had anything that makes noise like these do. When they rebuild pumps, they often test them on a "test bench"; almost like a dyno for a car. They test output/pressures at designated RPM, all of that kind of stuff and can tune the pumps/computes to match what is needed(according to specs). When on the test bench, he said some of the pumps will get an occasional creek/noise similar to the "crickets"; however, it is a random quick sound and isn't consistent.

- I too notice that the pump only starts to chirp when temperatures are high.
- The chirp seems to be getting worse with age. Had none until 7000 miles.
- I have had the same effect as others, different gas stations make the chirp go away.

Question: Do you have to destroy the pump to get it apart? I haven't actually looked at it. Can these be rebuilt?

If I can get some details on the pump, i could probably figure it out.

My car seems to have been getting worse as I have owned it. It was rare, bought it in late May with 6k, I now have 7300ish. Car is going in for a new pump. Maybe I can somehow acquire the old one after it is removed, I'll ask the service writer(good friend of mine).
