That makes sense. It is just more hassle stacked with more hassle. Do you think he can find a good tuning shop that can also inspect the kit to make sure it is in optimal condition? I just don't want the OP (or anyone) to have to run into more risks/damage/issues you know :/ no one wants to go through that gut wrenching experience ...

So there is nothing actually wrong with the kit itself in terms of idea, layout(for the most part), and components it's the piss poor QC and shipping. I would imagine if he is having a shop install the car they should inspect the components as they install them and fix any issues as they go. That's what they are getting paid for. I would reccomend using the stock header gaskets and having some exhaust rated rtv as almost every FA20club kit I've seen has leaked from there. Also the downpipe will most likely have to be reworked if you are connecting it to anything larger than stock overpipe as the flange is at a odd angle which causes a exhaust leak as well.

I would definitely consider @moto-mike both my friend and I had our e-mail tunes from him for our Miatas and cannot be happier. I personally worked with many tuners for my previous cars (NA, FI) and got used both dyno tune and email tune. Subarus, Evos, Vettes, Miata and he is the best tuner that I've ever worked with. ( I also have some terrible experience with some tuners just FYI)

I am not trying to create another "dyno tune vs e-tune" debate, I believe it all comes down to experience of the tuner. If your tuner is experienced enough, I think you can even benefit from using e-tune for real road conditions (or even track use), that's not something you can do with a controlled environment such as dyno. Many believe the best way is the combination of both but I don't know what to tell you. The thing with dyno tunes (according to my past experiences) most of the time they allow you a limited time (a few pulls) and you're done.

Mike really takes his time to make the tune perfect for your car, answer all your questions and send you updated versions until he believes the tune is flawless. Also, I wouldn't jump on the number game if I were you, I think a good reliable power is more important than the last bits of hp. I can gladly sacrifice the last 5-10 hp if it makes my car more reliable for both road and track use..

Good luck with your new project

People in the Subaru world have gotten good results via E-Tunes, I'm not really sold on them though and have always had my tunes done on a dyno and will do so with this car when I go FI. There are a few dyno tuners who will also take the car out on the road and fine tune things, Trey Cobb did that when he tuned my WRX. I wanted the best throttle response and it wasn't something you could really tune perfectly on a dyno.

I have no problem e-tuning FI cars, so long as the car has a wired-in wideband for logging.

Sounds like you have some good options available. The other option would be to do a hybrid where the kit is e-tuned, but while on an experienced local shop's dyno to provide a controlled environment.

You live in Houston! There are lots of great tuners there, in even capable great tuners in Austin and San Antonio. Dallas is also packed. You live in a great place for good shops and tuners.

D3PE, JMS and Boost Logic all have built and tuned some nasty 86s. Dunno about any done at a DFW based shops yet. Tho I did chat with Will and Paul at RSI, the turbo Viper shop, a while back and they mentioned possibly boosting one for a customer but that's been a while.

Texas is a great place for making cars fast.

I would have to give a shout to Boosted2.0's company DD Performance Research in Katy, Texas. Does great work! I drove my car all the way to him from New Orleans for an NA tune over a year ago and it still runs flawlessly. Great guy and know his stuff. I will be going back to him when I decide what else im going to do with my car.
