Great guide. Did my first oil change and it was really simple and easy.
I filled my car with 4.5 quarts of oil and checked the level, but it is past the max line. Anyone else have this problem? |

Man I thought the oil change on my 89 Camaro was a piece of cake...this looks even easier. For you guys complaining about oil getting on your hands I try to wear gloves when working on a car which really helps. Also I find that if you apply pressure inward while unscrewing the plug (by hand, after you've initially loosened it with a wrench, socket...whatever) you have more time to get your hand out of the way. Never had much luck with a downward facing filter though, even after its all drained I still have some oil come down on my hands.

Sorry about the double post but I think what you guys are experiencing is that the oil pan itself is full but when they rate it for maximum oil they include the amount that would also fit in the filter which is pointed down so its empty at the time when you check your oil it appears to be higher. I think that is the reasoning behind filling the filter before you actually fill up the rest but with this car and many others doing that is nearly impossible without making a huge mess. My car burns oil (being that its 25 years old) so I tend to over fill just a tad anyway. |

From Owners Manual:
Oil capacity (Drain and refill reference*) • Without filter 5.5 qt. (5.2 L, 4.6 Imp. qt.) • With filter 5.7 qt. (5.4 L, 4.8 Imp. qt.) If you changed the filter it should be 5.7 qt. Items in (paren) are for foreign measurements. |

Can any one recommend a source for reasonably priced magnetic drain plugs for the oil pan, automatic transmission and differential? I see Dimple mentioned ... I think that was the name ... but that doesn't fit the 'reasonably priced' criteria.
Thanks, Arvid

Thanks for the DIY. I picked up a "fumoto valve" which makes draining the oil a lot cleaner.

The aa130 OEM filters have grease on the gasket from the package. That's nice

^^I haven't seen an OEM filter by any manufacturer for any car that didn't come with lubricant on the gasket in many a year. With mine, I still apply a little motor oil on the gasket anyway, but that's just me.
