Not to bash the JR cooler kit but I would rather use the OEM cooler for the following reasons:
  • ability to utilize radiator for cooling so with the upgraded radiator the oil temps can be increased or decreased accordingly (thermostat radiator)
  • one less item in front of the IC
  • Cost

other than that JR cooler looks pretty good and I am pretty sure it does what it's supposed to do
The OEM cooler is not quite enough

yes, I should've looked closely and thanks for clarifying but still, it blocks some air that goes to the radiator

I wish we could compare the logs of the two options OEM vs air to air oil coolers so that we'd be able to tell how effective are the both units . I personally like the simplicity and the effectiveness of the OEM unit since it utilizes the size and functionality of the radiator. Having said that, I would like to get a bigger radiator (most likely a Koyo) and combine with the Oem cooler ..Since my car will be daily driven and will see some occasional track events, keeping the temps in ideal zone (not too cold in the morning) instead of cold all the time would be ideal imo.

In addition, it seems like the 2015 WRX will use the same OEM cooler (as I can see in the below pic). I think it should provide adequate cooling for the most part.. in the end, the whole reason I am getting a Rotrex unit instead of a turbo is to be able to fight with heat and heat related issues

It's the same reason track-going STIs replace the OEM cooler with an air cooler. It's suitable for some spirited driving, but not really for track driving, particularly when you also need to cool a turbo.

Maybe it's my lack of understanding, but I can't see how the OEM oil cooler is efficient enough to combat FI heat you get from multiple pulls and/or track days. Maybe I'm a noob, but you get all the real estate and rows of the satreb up front with more oil getting cooled than a small amount near the filter on the OEM... Maybe I'm not understanding how the OEM one works... Idk

Not sure how it will do for FI, but I'll find out in May. I'm so jealous of you Cali guys that can track all year round.
The thing is, it's still approaching 235-240F, which is higher than even the cheapest oil-air oil coolers, AND you're adding more strain to the engine coolant.

Looking at it from the front, there is the bypass valve to the right under the exit tube of the rotrex unit...

Here is the best pic I could find that I took:

Just trying to eyeball whether or not a certain longtube header would fit.

@*LongFella how much space would you say there is between the top edge of the crank pulley and the bottom of the Rotrex/lowest point on the unit (including the BPV - is it plastic?)?

Tuned one of these the other day... blew out the MAF immediately. How are you guys tuning these things without speed density (or on the stock MAP sensor since the kit didn't seem to come with one)? It's almost as if they designed the MAF to hit 5v right at redline on a stock car lol.

That would be accurate... it gets really sketchy around 4.85V, but then that's why the kit took this long to get to market right? >.<
