I am officially emptying my stable of an FT86 chassis in the next month. I'll be looking for a more bulletproof S2000 or Miata with which to move forward with for the time being.

Maybe a smart move. These days we have been spoiled with Toyota/Honda engines outlasting the rest of the car to the point that Toyota owners can't even fathom some of the issues that Subaru owners consider "normal", like headgaskets, ringlands, rod bears, etc.

Its hard to say with this engine. The crank and rods are the same as the FA20DIT so should be pretty solid. Remember pre '96 Subaru boxers were known to last a million miles and my hope was/is this engine was the return to the Subaru reliability of old.

What bothers me about this car is Toyota/Subaru's refusal to update the ECU calibration to correct the tip in knock (for 2012 build owners.) Until that's resolved I'm just driving under 5k rpm.

But with an S2k you don't have to worry about any of this, plus it obviously has more money invested in the stock build. But I still say watch the suspension bushings on a double wishbone Honda, depending on the shops near you replacement can get real expensive. JMHO but if you want a new car feel you should budget a new suspension on a 10 year old car.

So I am cautiously sticking with the FRS.

This FA20 may surprise us and last forever, its a risk you have to take to own a small rwd coupe (non vert.).

It's 6hrs labor for bushings. And the bushings themselves are < $500 for a complete set. It's not really a big deal. It's not like you are replacing them at the end of every season.

I'm over 160k miles, ~25 track days, on the original bushings in my '01 S2000.

I've never seen anyone NEED the bushings replaced on a S2000.
@regal: I've seen failures on the newer ECU.

That doesn't mean they are still in great condition.

I agree that you don't need to replace them though. I replaced all the bushings in my GS-R when I rebuilt it, yeah the original ~160k (probably 10-15k track mileage) bushings were very rough, but they still "worked".

New bushings did make a nice difference though, switching again to sphericals soon

Sadly I'm halfway there. The GS-R I never worry about so it's a solid (if not ideal for street use) backup. The M3 will break of course. It's a BMW. But that goes back to the GS-R.. for a DD the M has more room and a more usable trunk. I find myself barely driving the BRZ anymore. Ironically I did drive it today because I didn't feel like moving the GS-R out of the M3's way..

@Dave-ROR: What gen M3? E36? I can't imagine you being a E9x M3 owner for some reason.

Sometimes I wonder if we're smoking something for getting a second BRZ...

*edit* reading comprehension failure... it's in your sig lol

damn beat me to "read my sig".

The best year E36 I'd take a E9X over an E46
