There are all kinds of posts by people stating what kind of changes the FR-S should have and what they would prefer the FR-S to be as a car.

QUESTION, if the FR-S, as it came from the dealer, isn't to your liking, then why in the hell did you buy it?

I'm sure you knew the specs of the car. You knew it wasn't a muscle car killer.
It was always described as a car that handles well and a great driver's car. Nothing ever was said that it was a very powerful and fast car. Yet it is more than powerful enough to get by any normal traffic conditions.
I would assume you test drove it.

Changing an inexpensive RWD sports car with a specific engine that fits its design to a more expensive, more powerful car, would defeat why the FR-S/GT86 was made.

because the car that is to our liking may not exist, or at least not in our price range, so this was the best compromise. Also probably 90 percent of owners on this forum have done some form of modification, whether it is led's, floor mats, antenna, rims, or power adders. Your question could be expanded to say, If you didn't like the taillights/headlights/rims why did you buy the car? The only difference, is that some things are just more difficult/expensive to change, such as the engine.

I didn't realize the engine was not smooth for some of you guys. But for me it's one of the smoothest engines right under a I6. It's a naturally balanced engine. When I had my RSX I used to always feel a stressful feeling through the gas pedal and buzzy feel. But now it feels so much better through the pedal now.

It is quite possible.

The whole early tune direct injection/CEL issue was all due to the OEM tune. I believe CSG stated after they had their engine failure that third party tunes were more reliable than OEM.

The biggest issue I have with this engine is not peak output (hp or torque), but the torque dip and reliability (took me way too long to try to get a new tune from the dealership). There never was a recall or anyway to get the tune just as a preventative measure. Having to use some loop hole TSB (Rough Idle) to get the dealer to get a tune just rubs me the wrong way.

HMMMMM... I wonder just how much of the confusion between owners is created by some having that old original stock tune and some having the later "better" tunes? Would go a long way in explaining why some think it is rough or have other issues while others are wondering what they are talking about.

Yes, I agree it could all be due to that. This being my first Subaru product it definitely gives me a bad taste and makes me question their competence in tuning capabilities. The several tune failures in their old EJ, also don't make me think too highly of them.

I currently have the new tune, but I still don't feel 100% confident with the engine and even though the rough idle/smoothness seems to be better it is far from perfect. I just learned to deal with it and for the people who say pony up more money for better. I would have gladly paid Toyota more for a more reliable or powerful engine.

Also my first Subaru but I have never experienced rough idle and it runs as smooth as I would expect from a boxer style engine. Since my only pervious boxer experiences were either really old VWs and a Corvair I did not expect the same as a "standard" type engine.

My feelings for the rotary are much the same. It's a neat science experiment, but not to my liking.

Given my druthers, I would prefer a V6 or L4 design. For the record, I don't like any of the flat engines be it in a Subaru or a Ferrari or a VW.

Not sure where people think I am trolling, I asked a legitimate question and expected a considered answer. I am constantly amazed by people who try to interpret insult into anything they read on a Forum.

So, my question still stands, "Would this be a better car with a non boxer engine?
Go away troll.
