Could that have been the toe changes in the rear as reported in the Japanese tests?
I did not see anything like that (other than TH). Generally everyone seemed to like the handling.

Also... the Throttle House video was not at Monticello. With all the uncertainty around the suspension changes I wonder when they filmed it and if the car they had was the same spec as the ones all the other reviewers used at Monticello.

Thank you!

Very interesting, I thought these cars didn’t have VINs yet.

I believe since these are early production models, they all have VINs that are slightly different from the actual production vehicles.

The Trueno Blue Base GR86 was JF1MSHZN2U4000062
and the Track bRed Premium was JF1MSHZNXU4000066, etc etc

The U before the production # is an invalid check digit for a US production car, but as you can see almost all of these cars are in the 50s/60s for their production number.

It's likely that there are already full production cars starting manufacturing, as we are expecting to see cars land in California ports by Thanksgiving/Late November time.

Toyota Canada held separate events from Toyota USA. I believe the Canadian outlets were each given an individual day to shoot with the car due to Covid restrictions. They were filmed at about the same time as the US ones though, give or take about a week.

My guess is that the Canadians couldn't travel to Monticello due to COVID restrictions, so they got a car in Toronto Motorsports Park. The Straight Pipes also reviewed a red GR86 and also in TMP. On the other hand Jason Cammisa also did his video not in Monticello. I guess lots of YouTube subscribers gets you preferential treatment.

GR86 first drive reviews thread

Me listening to The Straight Pipes. I ended up not finishing it after the 10 or so time. Savage Geese is slipping. Some of the things they say don’t make sense. Like “because it’s a torsen it has easy to control suspension.”

First of all, Throttle House reviews their cars on Dunnville Motorsports Park (it is closed to the public due to noise complaints but you can rent it privately). It's a shrewd move as it makes TH very exclusive when it comes to track results and its difficult to compare them to anyone else.

Second of all, Straight Pipes calling the curbing at TMP "Continental Curbing" is sooooo cringey. They are fun to watch for YouTube consumerism but as car folks or technical folks? Its full of weird statements.

As for the Canada reviews (which TH And SP are), Canada only has the ONE GR86 going around town right now for everyone to spend a day with.

Sauce: I used to be in the industry and still keep touch with the peeps. You can find my name hidden in a bunch of TH stuff.

The car felt progressive at the limit, just like the first gen. Monticello raceway had plenty of off-camber and elevation changes and the car was predictable as expected through the rear suspension travel.

I drove both the base and the premium on the different tire setups and the Primacies were as slidey as they were on the old car. Pilot 4's on the Premium suited the car very well for my driving style, plenty of grip but easy to rotate the rear on throttle when you're at the limit.

On the bumpy NY backroads it very much just felt like I was driving my BRZ. The balance is basically unchanged from what I felt. No wacky toe-out on compression like an S2k or anything, at least in the few hours I got with the car.
thoughts on power delivery of a header/tuned/e85 ft86 vs the gr86?

Considering capitalizing on the high resale of my car right now.

SP seems to aim their productions (consciously or not) at a very young audience, say 18-21 year olds. Oh and people who have taken way too much coke.

At least he explains the torque characteristics of the new engine vs. the old properly. And I totally agree with him on the rev-matching MT. Toyota already has this tech in its manual Corollas, for heaven's sake.
