Background:
Location City of Tempe (Arizona) College kids were doing a photo shoot with their brand new cars on the boat ramp at the lake. When suddenly one of the cars just started rolling backwards. As the car went into the lake they tried everything they could to avoid the car from floating away. Eventually the cops and Lake Security arrived. Reddit link

#humfrztime 5 years ago, when test driving different rwd stick cars, i visited a dealer that had a 350z. when first looking at it, i was surprised to find the car was in neutral, and the e-brake was pulled up 2 notches from all the way down. i cranked on it to keep the car from rolling around the lot, a good 10 notches. later when i went to test drive the car, they had to have the one person that knew how to drive stick go along, an older female salesperson. i was initially impressed that the only person on an entire dealers staff that knew how to drive stick was this older lady, until i got into the car and found the e-brake pulled to the same 2-notch 'meh'-ness level. a lot of people just don't seem to understand that a haphazard tug on the parking brake is the only thing keeping their car from rolling down a boat ramp...

This ^ is funny...
My girlfriend is always begging me to let her set or release the parking brake. I always tell her "no". When she asks "why?", I tell her because she doesn't know how to do it correctly, just to tease her. But, I guess there really are people who don't know how to do it correctly... |

It's probably that ugly blue strip covering the front window had something to do with the loss of situational awareness. As pilots we do special training about SA but I guess for car drivers it's not necessarily obvious that covering your eyes is detrimental to defensive drving...

Just returned from brunch at the Buttered Biscuit and a drive out through the countryside.
The brunch was excellent and the drive on dry roads on a sunny day was fun. This kid with some sort of a black car kept tailgating me until I entered this one set of twisties that I know well. You know the kind of "S" curves that one begins to wonder if the second leg will ever quit turning - He tried to keep up, but after he tried to widen the road and kicked up a bunch of dust and gravel, he backed off. Man's got to know his car's limitations. We did not crash. 84 degrees F outside, time to turn on the AC and take a nap - humfrz |
