Seems like if what they said is true then a lot of people just need to learn to not rest their foot on the clutch pedal. It also seems like if driver error was the problem then it wouldn’t lead to a TSB.
I hold my clutch at every red light, in gear, which is the proper technique.

My S2000 bearing died at 116k miles.

Removed my tranny today. Flywheel, PP and clutch looked decent. TOB was fried n melted. The backing seperated. The insides seemed to have no more fluid which was in a puddle in the bellhousing.

The thing is I am thinking of replacing the snout too. It was kinda worn down so I don’t know if the snout will be a problem for future failures.

Can't quote you. Very good idea to replace the transmission front cover. Before you apply the sealant, make sure the mating surfaces are completely de-greased, and that the transmission is oriented so oil doesn't seep down into the face you just cleaned.

I posted pics in my build thread. Just FYI.

I figure for $80 it is good insurance to just replace it.

Is the sealant just standard high temp gasket glue from any parts store? I didn’t see a parts number online for a sealant.

Also, I emailed Exedy and got this in less than 24 hours:

Hi Justin,

Thank you for choosing EXEDY products for your vehicle.

Currently the updated bearing is only available from Subaru or Toyota. The bearing in the kit is the old version. We are working with the bearing manufacture that supplies the updated bearing so that we can supply this bearing in the near future.

If you have any further questions feel free to contact me.

Steve
I’m just glad to know that buying the My17 TOB will be money well spent instead of wondering if I wasted money.

I just went through the whole same thing you're going through. New Flywheel, pilot bearing, New input shaft cover/snout casting, Exedy "Stage 1" clutch (looks OEM to me). I read about the bearings, and found the new revised TOB part number cheapest from Olathe Toyota so I went the new bearing route (ordered 2 of em). I even replaced the $5 a piece, green thread locker coated cover/snout bolts that the service manual designates as "one time use".

The TOB that came in the Stage 1 clutch kit looked IDENTICAL to the revised Toyota PN bearing, minus the white dot. It'll be the last one I use as a spare

I used Permatex Optimum Grey for the snout/cover surface. It's high heat resistance was a bonus, as I figure it gets HOT in there. Also lightly greased the new snout with Amsoil high temp resistant synthetic grease. 30 street miles and then straight to the track for 8 30 min run sessions. Seems to be fine so far...

SKF is not the bearing manufacture for these bearings, they are made by NTN.

Whoops!

I made a false assumption some time ago after seeing this.

The only way you are guaranteed the "latest" throwout bearing is if you ordered the genuine Toyota or Subaru part number that supercedes the older one.

Some clutch kits do not have TOBs included.
Some clutch kits give you "OE replacement" which is anything that meets/exceeds the standard genuine OEM in terms of quality/warranty.... which is 12000 miles or 12 months if you buy it new (and installed by certified mechanic).
Some clutch kits give you aftermarket OE replacement TOBs.
Some clutch kits give you aftermarket performance replacement TOBs (either in OE configuration or their own design, such as OS Giken or Exedy Hyper or ORC)

Good luck.

SKF does make a version of the OE bearing (old style/same bearing used for all of the non turbo Subaru's) but NTN is the OE supplier to Subaru/ Toyota for these bearings.

The release bearing used in the Twins is the same bearing that has been used since the 90's for the 2.5L non turbo and now the FB25 and FB20 ( is that the right engine code for the Impreza 2.0l ??) non turbo equipped Subaru's Those cars use a 225mm clutch which has a higher release load (force required to move the diaphragm spring) than the OEM pressure plate assembly used in the twins. The other cars have very rare instances where the bearing wears out like we regularly see with these cars.

The updated bearing only applies to the BRZ in the Subaru line according to their parts network. Subaru also updated the release bearing for the WRX due to a chirping noise complaint. This update was a redesign not just an grease change.

Thanks for sharing the email, I would have answered you here as well.

to share the info from our follow up emails, when replacing the bearing sleeve/support I would use the OEM specified RTV (Threebond 128)as it is designed to be used with transmission oil. The Toyota part number is 00295-01281.

And you also said the future kits would have the new TOB, right?
