DOT Crash Test (non) Data for FR-S/BRZ
Sent an email to crashtest@DOT.GOV to see if they had test data yet. Here was the response:
========================================== The 2013 Scion FRS & 2013 Subaru BRZ have not been tested. We have not yet begun testing model year 2013 vehicles and we are currently in the process of selecting which vehicles will be tested. We have not yet determined whether the Scion FRS or the Subaru BRZ will be tested. Unfortunately we are not able to test every vehicle in every crash mode. Each year, the NCAP is assigned a specific amount of funds by Congress. The program is not authorized to spend funds beyond what Congress approves. In order to optimize the money allotted by congress, we generally only test those vehicles with the highest expected projected sales volumes. Sometimes, NHTSA chooses to test a vehicle that has a potentially innovative safety device, regardless of the sales volume. These, along with carry-over vehicles and corporate twins, provide information on approximately 80% of the passenger vehicles sold in the USA. For further safety information on additional vehicles, you may want to visit the IIHS, EuroNCAP, Japan NCAP, or Australian NCAP websites. You can link to them from our web site. Even though your vehicle was not tested by NCAP it is still a safe car. Since the vehicle is sold in the United States, it is still required to pass minimum Federal safety standards. If it did not, the manufacturer could not sell the vehicle in this country. Remember, NCAP tests are currently run at higher speed than the standards. The higher NCAP speeds are meant to let the consumer know how much additional safety potential the car has. We also hope market forces will encourage the manufacturers to design higher levels of safety into their cars. Thank you for your continued interest in our program. NCAP www.safercar.gov 888-327-4236

That's not unusual. I know when the Smart came to the US it was 16 to 18 months before they crash tested it. Of course, that could have been because they kept missing the barriers with them...

If anyone heard about the problems with the scion IQ which caused its delayed release being literally death traps because of the metal they used (as was the rumor I heard), I would actually like to see the crash test information, even if it was European information.

True, but in my mind id love to see some hard lab data before putting a loved one in the passenger seat. Suppose its just my overly worrisome nature ahha.

Also, someone else mentioned on here that the "Jaws of life" had to be re-engineered for fire fighters simply because Subaru put so much steel into the B pillers of their cars, they couldn't cut through them in an emergency. So they had to give the jaws MORE power. They said something like 9 folds of steel are in the B pillers making the body super strong. bneale |
