it was pretty bad. id say night time would be easier to look at the speedo.

definitely a strong negative on the interior and the GTS digital speedo is necessary to the point of probably being standard on the next model.

Exactly. I think there is a reason all models have digital speedo - its necessary!

Guys, please write to Toyota to express this. Remember, if your car is on order its still being built, if they agree its an issue they can change it relatively quickly.

I might be a little pissed if people with the GT get a free upgrade to GTS cluster to be honest... thats one of the reason I paid the extra for the GTS...

It wasn't a problem for me to read, a bit annoying though.

Don't worry mate, I am not asking for a white carbon fibre dash. Just the digital speedo, once again I consider this a necessity not a add on!

This is what I sent to Toyota Aus:

"Good day. I have recently placed an order on the 86 GT and went to a dealership for a test drive on the weekend. While I was overall very happy with the car, I have noticed something that is, in my opinion a serious safety issue. On the GT spec vehicle, due to the location of the speedometer, the orientation and the size of the lettering, it can be very hard to read while driving the vehicle and can require the driver to take the eyes off the road. In addition there could be legal issues due to the strict speed limit laws in Australia.

I had no such issues with the GTS as it had a digital speedometer.

I urge you to reconsider your decision not have the digital speedometer as part of the GT spec vehicle. I believe this is a serious safety concern.

Regards,

Name"

I put filled out a form here:

http://www.toyota.com.au/email-us?enquiryType=Vehicle

and specified the enquiry as "I would like to tell you about my experience with"
and topic as "Safety" and put the text above into the "Description or comment" text box.

If you could spend 5 minutes and do the same, we might see this already great car slightly improved!

You can see why they didnt put it in the gt because of it's price point. Toyota Australia knew that the sub 30k price is what consumers would find tantalising. Which means they had to cut the features out of the car. hence why the GT is bare bones. Just look at the radio, straight out of a hilux workmate. In saying that.....it's freaking tiny!!

Can I ask how long was your test drive?
At first I also found it uncomfortable as the numbering didn't start in the conventional position. However, after a while, it really became less unusual. I had the benefit of driving the GT over the weekend and after a while, it was not an issue.

I hope you also get used to yours soon after you take delivery. We find most people get used to looking at a different dash after a week or so.
When we sold the Echo with the central digital dash, lots of people thought it was weird and unnerving. After a week, they swore by it.

Let us know if you do get any sort of response from Toy Aus.
Thanks for the feedback.

I don't think it's any worse than the speedo in my MiTo, which is something I got used to pretty quickly.

Hell, it's SO much better than the 164 my brother drives, where the needle doesn't even reach the numbers or lines. And neither he nor anyone who drives the car has gotten a speeding fine (and that's with a sonorous Italian V6 for encouragement!):

I suppose if it's that much of an issue though, there are solutions. GPS unit?

It doesn't worry me at all. Certainly not a safety concern IMO.

@Loki556 , have you even pre-ordered? if it is so much a concern perhaps the $5k might be worth the upgrade for you.
