GoPro Mounting Locations

I got a GoPro for Christmas. I also have a new exhaust showing up on Saturday.

What are some of the best GoPro mounting locations? I'm specifically interested in getting the best audio capture of my exhaust so that I can do a comparison of the stock vs the new one.

Good luck - trying to not record wind noise yet record an exhaust note while driving will be tricky. the best think you can do is mount it on the rear bumper - hopefully you will record a more less amount of wind noise

Suction cup on the bumper is what I used for the external shots in this:

Hero 3 Black in the stock case with the open back door, no external mic used.

This is mounted on the rear bumper. Not bad, but still not great.

Interesting. This would probably work quite well. I'm putting my new exhaust on as soon as it arrives on Saturday, though.

Thanks!

Actually, that sounds really good for a straight raw audio recording from just the GoPro.

You may not be that hardcore or into audio recording, BUT if you are I have been messing around with audio recording myself. I have been using my contour ROAM to record video, and I use my Tascam DR-07 to record audio. [ame="http://www.amazon.com/TASCAM-DR-05-Portable-Digital-Recorder/dp/B004OA6JW0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1388644544&sr=8-2&keywords=tascam+dr-07"]Amazon.com : TASCAM DR-05 Portable Digital Recorder : Portable Studio Recorders : Musical Instruments[/ame]

What is cool about the tascam is that it has many options - like different audio formats as well as quality of each format. It also can mount on a tripod or suction cup mount (the hole that can screw into the mount). It comes in handy for me - not even just for car audio but anything else as well. Typically I will have my contour facing the front getting some video, and I will mount the Tascam on my rear bumper. Hope that helps.

How did you mount it to get the view on the thumbnail?

Thanks!

Suction cup on the rear window, right near the top. I think the POV was set to narrow as well though.

You could use a tow hook mount.

Make sense, was wondering how you got so close to the front dash/shifter.

This is actually a lot easier than you think. My GoPro was mounted in the front on the Raceseng Tug View mount, and with the exposed rear cover it recorded a large amount of engine sound with minimal wind noise.

I think with exhaust comparisons, the hardest part is the noise capture. A lot of inferior mics (including what's on the GoPro) won't capture the entire dynamic range of an aftermarket exhaust. The same clip above w/ my engine noise made the FA20 sound like a raspy stock B16 engine out of an early 90s Honda.
