Miata based Alfa Romeo Spyder?

Thoughts? Here are the articles, IMO the combination is full of win!! Alfa styling is just sexy!!

"Mazda Motor Corp. and Fiat S.p.A.’s Alfa Romeo unit agreed to develop and build a new roadster for both brands, based on the next generation of Mazda’s MX-5, known in the U.S. as the Miata.

For Alfa Romeo fans – or Alfisti — the move marks the long-awaited return to the U.S. market of a successor to the classic Alfa Duetto and Spider two-seat convertibles that defined the Italian maker in the 1960s and 1970s.

For Mazda the occasion arguably confirms its position at the top of the sports-car heap. When the Miata rolled out in 1989 some sports-car purists said it was too tame, even “dumbed down” compared with the vintage British and Italian roadsters that inspired its design. Indeed some said it was a virtual copy of certain Alfa Romeo models.

But the Mazda prevailed in part because, unlike those other sports models, it ran reliably and didn’t require an hour of maintenance for every hour spent on the road. Challengers including the Honda S2000, Pontiac Solstice and Toyota MR Spyder came and went as the MX-5 soldiered on and developed a solid following.

Now Alfa, seeking to re-enter the U.S. roadster market, is piggybacking on the coming redesign of the MX-5.

“This agreement clearly demonstrates our commitment to Alfa Romeo and the determination to grow it into a truly global brand. By partnering with Mazda, we will be co-operating with the recognized leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster in the Alfa Romeo tradition,” said Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne.

The companies said they are determined to differentiate the two cars with distinct styling and proprietary engines. However, both models will be built in the Hiroshima, Japan plant that has built MX-5s for decades.

Production of the new Alfa model is planned for 2015, though the agreement is preliminary and the companies are still working out its details. The car makers said they expect to sign a final agreement in the second half of this year. They also said they will discuss “further opportunities for co-operation in Europe.”

Oh my god a possible good looking Miata, I can barely stand it.

Sadly I fear it might end up with "good looking Miata" pricing attached to it.

While ultimately a hard top is hard to sacrifice, if it drives like an MX-5 and ends up looking anywhere as good as that I'd hit it like Shoemaker-Levy. Let's hope Alfa doesn't screw the pooch on styling.

I'm from Italy and let me say 2 things:
don't believe anything that come from Alfa, they always announce some great cars but never built one, like the MiTo GTA and now even with the 4C (nobody knows something about the car even if it was exposed at geneve 2 years ago)
If they really going to make this Alfa/Mazda i will be very happy but i want to see some official stuff

Good job, I like competition but Toyota has helped people like Aston Martin, and Lotus so this will be good
