Five Axes
At a gentleman's retreat in the mountains with no roads, electricity, plumbing or other signs of civilization; some hand tools are needed.
Gathering and preparing firewood and building materials, for instance, requires chainsaws and axes. The real question is, as it has been put to me in high pitched voices: "OMG, how many axes could you possibly need?!" After trying out different solutions I have managed to reduce the number to five. These five. They are, from right to left: 1. The Cleaver. A brute made by Øyo in Norway. With a two handed, over head stroke it splits anything, including large diameter logs. 2. The Chopper. A well balanced, precise axe with composite handle by Fiskars in Finland. For smaller logs. 3. The Carpenter. Hand forged at Gränsfors in Sweden. Extremely sharp, for delicate persuasion and construction. 4. The Brancher. By Fiskars. Nicks branches off trees. A perfect companion for the chainsaw. 5. The Hiker. By Øyo. My walking around axe, honed to a knife sharp edge. So, that's my five axes! |

Based on the fact that the handle twists in your hand when the axe hits, I don't think I'm going to like it though. |

Nice, I have #1, 2 and 5. I think mine is a Fiskars X25 though. My hatchet is the smallest Fiskars X7. My splitter is more generic, definitely not as nice as yours.
I also have the Fiskars curved brush axe, but that's more for Zombies than anything. My GF also thinks i'm crazy for having so many, women...

I've used the curved brush axe from Fiskars and would definitely get one if I didn't have a brushcutter. |
