I think it's worth researching and testing - maybe even developing a more elegant version (small plastic piece that diverts the water instead of a wall of goo). I'd certainly be inclined to buy a set of plastic diverters if they existed, just as an extra precaution.
My Crystal Eyes were second hand properly sealed, (I believe the gaskets were properly sealed by the factory).
Snow man snot is available at any stationary store - (the stuff to stick notes on fridges etc.). Non toxic, waterproof, doesn't melt in the summer, easily pliable, removable etc.

And only 99 cents ! Kamset Power Tack (or equivalent) - 4 sticks in a pack - all you need.
