Another subjective factor influencing speed perception is sound. A Miata will be letting far more road, tire, and engine noise in the cabin than a 335i - again, creating a perception of more speed.

Exactly. 70 MPH feels much faster in my Chevy Astro than it does in my Mustang. Why, because the Astro has almost 300K miles on it and you definitely feel the road under your wheels and hear the noise. I feel like I'm standing still in the Mustang at that speed, even with the top down.
By the way, the Astro will "throw you back in your seat" if you floor it from a stop or in first gear. Of course, that could just be transmission lag...
