As far as the difference between prepreg and wet, I believe when OEMs do wet layup they would have a process to ensure no voids and similar strength to prepreg. Forged composite parts are also quite strong despite chopped fibers. It's about getting the fibers closer together, whatever process used doesn't matter.
Yes, I understand your comment, and I am conceding that they are the same thing. It is just a common usage to use CFRP when referring to something that is a low or medium density fiber composite versus classically woven carbon fiber.

The article mentions that BMW injects resin into a mold under high heat and pressures. I have no clue if they can achieve a similar quality, evenness, finish and performance that comes from using pre-impregnated pieces; I have seen the 4C in person, and the exposed carbon is really nice.

Some of the forged composites look nice too, but there is no way they would be as strong as traditional carbon fiber just like how plywood, MDF, etc doesn't stand up to the strength of wood or layered wood.
