Oh, my, allow me to explain what "chopping" a crop is. Chopping a crop simple means hoeing the weeds out of the rows of a crop or thinning out the population (stand). Now, since I was born and raised on a farm in Ohio, we didn't grow cotton, but I spent many of hours chopping (hoeing) corn.
Now, down in Georgia, there is more cotton than corn grown. So, the young farm boys would be tasked with chopping cotton rather than corn.
So, back in the day, when a kid got tired of chopping corn on the farm he moved to the city (Cincinnati or Dayton) and got on with an automotive company.
When a kid got tired of chopping cotton in the South, sometimes they moved to Detroit to work for an automotive company.
Am I making my point clear or do I have to tell a few more back in the day stories? -
