I like this method -- went outside and checked out those steel covers; yes they do seem sturdy enough to hold the engine still via the tie down. Set it once and forget it for the duration of the job.
With a jack, it's in the way as you're working and moving back and forth to and from under the car; it's too easy to bump it out of place; and as I learned, also pretty easy to jack it back up too much when replacing a jack that's been bumped out of place.
