Found this thread when searching for activated carbon filters for the BRZ as that's the route I want to go.

I think Subaru has activated carbon filters for some of the Legacy models, but your OEM filter was just dirty. That's pretty much how all of them look after some miles. As far as the even coloring, attribute that to well designed HVAC airflow.
