eCOTY is always a great read. I look forward to it each year. The thing is, eCOTY is more of an overall Car of the year, not a "Driver's Car" of the year. So the 86 had a huge hill to climb. I'm not surprised it didn't make the final cut. There are a lot of boxes that it just doesn't tick. And it's big giant-killer (feel/price) doesn't factor into eCOTY.
I'm very surprised it beat the Cayman in Autocar's test. But I'm not complaining.
I'd be very interested to see how the STI/TRD factory versions do since they would hopefully come on better rubber and have a small bump in power. I think the stock Michelins are a big factor here. They're great for hooning, but pretty poor for anything else.
