Just a guess, but hammering metal is like forging metal—making it harder. I could imagine that the metal could have gotten worked in such a way as to make it more difficult to bend. It can also get kinks and ripples that not only stiffen that section, but it can make it brittle, which leads to cracks. I’m sure it can turb into a nightmare real fast without a clear plan or a few wrong approaches.
