Aftermarket Exhaust and Potential Fatalities

Recently had an exhaust fitted by a very reputable shop (which will remain unnamed as I have a great deal of respect for the owner and how he runs his business) but...

On the drive home I noticed the steering wheel was cocked to one side by a few degrees. Figured they might have undone the unijoint to fit the overpipe. Not a big deal.

A week later I could feel a bit of 'slop' in the steering especially when stationary. When I investigated the bolt was missing from the unijoint clamp! Either it had not been replaced, or it had not been tightened! I could slide the unijoint right off the steering rack spline. It's not inconceivable that a rough road or big jolt could have done the same resulting in zero connection between the steering wheel and the wheels. Turned white as a sheet when I realised.

Moral(s) of the story:

If something about your car feels different please investigate it. Even top mechanics fuck up.

(I'll be racing this weekend at Noosa and will have the offending bolt drilled and safety wired!)
