I've always used the k&n filter cleaner and oil kit. Just follow the directions from the kit and it gets the filter like new. The pre filter sock isn't necessary due to the filter being protected and dry inside the engine bay. Also hitting the filter with compressed air won't hurt anything just don't overkill it.
